Is it possible to locate an old vehicle if you have a VIN number?

My wife has talked for years about her grandfathers old Bronco. I finally decided that I would do some work and try to locate the vehicle.

I really was not sure how to go about finding this information but I have located the VIN# and have some pictures of the 1966 Bronco.

I have been trying to utilize the VIN number to track down the sales history but it doesn't look like it is legal to use the BMV in Ohio (where I live)

Does anyone have any suggestions on the best way to track down a vehicle with limited information?
I wasn't sure if a site like carfax or one of those would be helpful.

I also posted on the lost car registry

Thanks in advance and I apologize if I this isn't the appropriate area to post this.

From you VIN, the Bronco you are looking for is a roadster model. You may want to check out this site and see if it has been registered there.

Could you apply for a list title , that would maybe tell you who had it last ?

Post pics when you can, it very well may not look like a roadster anymore as well if it's still around.

Gateway Bronco has one similar, albeit a little rougher. It’s been sitting in their warehouse for at least a year.

Being in Ohio it’s possible that Gas Pig on here may know of that one. He’s a Roadster specialist who has restored several so if anyone on here knows it, it’s likely him.

Man it was slick back in the day.
I sold a Bronco to a man on here .. We're from Texas . & I'd lost the title .. SO HE TOOK THE VIN.NIMBER & called DMV. tHEY DIDN'T GIVE HIM MUCH INFORMATION But they did tell him it was a clear title & still in the same persons name back to like 1991... At least he knew it wasn't stolen .
... & A year & half later I found the title .

I had actually considered the private investigator angle but wasn't sure they would be helpful.

Thanks

Insurance agents can sometimes be helpful, not sure they can legally give out the information they have access to though....

I was lucky, I just googled my ex-bronco VIN and found it as recently sold by an online classic car dealer in Georgia! Talked about my extensive spreadsheet on what I'd done to it over the years and I could see the restoration it had been through after i sold it!

old school vins are not supported by any state DMV or insurance company. IOW untraceable unless it is currently registered.

Update:

Thanks for your help.

I ended up hiring a Private Investigator and was able to track down the owner before the current owner. The previous owner was able to provide the name of the current owner.

I posted on his facebook without success but ultimately tracked down through his sister.

Waiting for him to reach out but I do know that he still owns the vehicle

Thanks

That's great! That doesn't happen very often.

So I ended up talking with him.

Very nice guy.

Curious if anyone would be willing to give advice on a fair price for both parties as he did inicate he would be willing to sell the vehicle.

If so, please send me a message and I can explain what he told me regarding condition.

I am going to go see it this week as he has had it in storage for 20 years.

appreciate all the input!

thanks
