My Bronco ran like crap at OCBR, didn't even hit a trail the last day because I was scared I may not make it back. Running Holley Terminator EFI and had run flawlessly for almost 2 years up until the first uphill obstacle at OCBR, nothing extreme at all. I fought it until Friday playing with the EFI settings thinking it was something with the system. I pulled the fuel filters late on Friday and they were full of what looked like paint flakes. Replaced the filters and it run good for a few minutes and has been gradually getting worse, so I know the filters are probably full again. I rinsed the tank out before I installed it. Whatever this is had to come from the tank itself or was in fuel that I put in it. I just don't think it was in the fuel but can't say for sure. I plan to pull the tank next week and sell it, didn't like how far it hung down anyway, sheered one of the bolts that holds the skid plate slamming on a rock. I am going to go with a bed mounted fuel cell.

Anyway, not bashing the tank because I don't know where that crap came from yet, but a couple people told me at OCBR they had the same problem and was from the lining of the tank. I won't know for sure until I pull it out but was curious if anyone else had that problem.

Many years ago when i got mine, it did have some powder coating debris left over in there. I had to get it out first...that was at least 12 years ago though...

BCB tank? Why not call Jason at BCB and ask him? I've had their tank for many years and not one problem. Yours could be a later model but Jason will know if others have had a problem.

I cant wait to hear the customer service reply on this one. I did see the filters on the truck. Looked like flakes of black paint. Lots of them. I am sure it's something You did JW

I had heard in the past that many of these 23 gallon tanks had debris in them from the manufacturing process and it needed to be vacuumed out prior to installing it.
This debris was the result of the manufacturer and not necessarily the eb vendor.

Definitely should clean the tank before use, looked like sand/welding slag in my BCB tank.

Last time I dropped it and opened it (a couple weeks ago) there wasn't any paint inside.

There are a few threads on this forum and others about needing to clean out tanks before using them.

It does not seem to only be a BCB problem, but an aftermarket gas tank manufacturer problem.

Just another example of labor cost cutting by passing it along to the buyer.

Pulled my BCB tank and I found a gray colored coating that was peeling off. Big mess, sanded, wire brushed and scraped til I had it clean then vacuumed it out. Plugged a couple of filters first though. On a side note, I got stuck on a trail in MO and pulled the line off the filter, kids don't do this, and spewed fuel all over my face and in my ear, still have a ringing sound today from the fuel.

Because I would like to hear from those on here.

Hey Wendell, I checked with my friend and his was a TBP tank, same type problem and the filters looked the same. It was supposedly from the blasting material used to clean up the tank after the welding???

It seems like someone, builder/vendor or who ever would clean out the tank before selling it????%)%)%)

Well, nothing wrong with the tank, lots of crap floating around in the fuel that was in it. I either didn't get it washed out good enough before installing or it went into the tank with fuel.

I have a BCB tank and have had it installed since 2008. I cleaned it prior to installing it but still have had to replace filters every year. I don't put that many miles/hours on it but I regret I bought it. They (BCB) know it might be a problem so one would think they would tell the buyer to clean it out prior to installing it!

We vacuum out all our tanks before assembling them. Many years ago we tried a inner coating, and yes, it was a horrible mess. We haven't done it since. I am sorry to hear you had problems on the trail. Kind of puts a damper on the fun.

More history on the tanks. First they are made with aluminized steel. Except the one bunch that the manuf. thought he could cut a little cost by powder coating them on the inside and the guy that was doing the powdercoating thought he could cut a little off his cost by not cleaning the blast media out but just pwdercoating it in place. Neither idea worked out. Once we found the problem we recalled the 7-8 that had been shipped and sent the whole order back. So that was fixed, the inside coating was gray. Also at one point the coater was leaving the media in the tanks that caused some filters to plug. Anyway for the last 6-7 years we vacuum every tank and after the sender is installed we check it to be sure it reads full and empty. The black stuff I am not sure about, is it hard like sand? Also all sand would be on the bottom not floating.

I'm not sure what it is. There is nothing wrong with the tank. I had my suspicions based on what I was hearing from others before getting the tank out and looking. Should have done that before posting. Posted early out of frustration. There were black/greyish looking flakes floating in the fuel and in the 100micron pre filter. I have a 10 micron filter after the pump and now that it is dry there is a white powdery substance flaking off of it, filter is clogged. I opened the tank and rinsed before I installed it and the tank itself looks fine on the inside. I filled my gas cans at a truck stop in route to OCBR, the only thing I can figure is that's where it came from.

I have never seen the aluminum flake off but I guess it is possible. how long have you had the tank? Could the white powder stuff be aluminum oxide? While I no longer own BCB I am sure Jason and Gretchen would want to know if there is a problem.
