You need to find a shop that you like, drop it off and have them build what you want, or buy one thats done like you want.

I know guys use the ac bracket with the explorer front dress but it might require some vintage air parts to go with it. Probably an aftermarket fuel pump. EB brake set up whether vaccuum or hydroboost. Hydro is a little smaller and better braking. Power steering pump and bracket from explorer will work but will require proper hoses to mate it to whatever ps box you run. Personally I would do the saginaw pump upgrade especially if you go hydroboost or have 33s or bigger tires. I would upgrade from the explorer t-case. Theres an adapter for the explorer trans to the dana 20. I think an atlas mates right up. A 205 case might bolt up but requires more fab worktop instal it. Double check that transfer case info. I'm not 100% on that info but been reading up a little for if I swap mine to an explorer auto trans. The nice thing about getting the entire explorer is you won't forget any plugs, wiring, bolts or brackets at the junkyard.

Thanks for info. Well i have a 96 explorer engine on a pallet in my garage, so still a trans ,harness etc. needed ..might find a mountaineer or another explorer to rape parts for convenience. Ill plan with my motorhead guy.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong but the 96 explorer heads play better with most bronco exhaust manifolds or headers due to spark plug angle but the 98 and up efi parts are better. The other explorer heads need the bronco hut headers or possibly a set from bc to get to the spark plugs easier.ive never actually done the swap so somebody with the experience chime in .I've just been reading up incase I swap my 351 to efi.

I think you are stressing too much. This thread includes most of what you to achieve what you are trying to do.

first, forget the engine you, just sell it.

second, find a 4wd v8 explorer 1998 to 2000 may work best. make sure it runs, drives, and has a solid drive train

third. remove engine, trans, computer and engine/trans wire harness.

4rth, install engine and trans into your bronco

5th send computer and harness to efi guy and have him modify harness for your bronco

6th install computer and harness into your bronco

7th, you will need a trans adapter from the explorer trans(4r70w) to the dana 20 you already have. it comes with directions. can be purchased from any bronco vendor site on here.

8th, you may need to modify your drive shares because the transfer case will be slightly back from where it is now, you will also need a lokar shifter adapter.

you will also need the fuel pump out of the explorer and modify for your tank, or better yet, buy a 23 gallon tank with efi oump already in it.

this is 90 percent of the job.

if others have stuff to add or comments, please use 1a or 2a under the according line for additional steps.

or ship it to me and I will do the swap over the fall and winter.

If you go with the explorer swap keep the explorer until the bronco is up and running if possible. Theres sure to be some small stuff you forgot to pull from it.

I’m a little concerned however if I use a vehicle of that age with that many miles, only to have a short second life ..
most of the explorers ive located now are beat 185k miles .
Doesnt that worry anyone on a swap?

SteveL is correct. since the explorer engine will be out. just break it down and take the long block to a local engine shop and have them rebuilt it. you could prob get it rebuilt for about 1500.00

If you get it rebuild wouldnt hurt to have the tranny looked at too. Dont go crazy on a shift kit or you'll eat u-joints.

Since i have a 96 explorer motor I just will have to source a 4R70 rebuilt and d20.
Does someone sell or make a harness for this or do I have to locate from a donor ?

With a 4r70w swap, there are three differnt ways to go for the harness.

1- buy a shift controller from US shift (this is what i did because i did not explorer swap)

2- send your explorer harness to EFiGUY on here and he can do it.

3-EFIGUY put out instructions on how to do it yourself, follow his insructions and do it yourself.

You will also need to buy the adavanced adapters brand adapter to mount the 4r70w to the dana 20

You will also need to build a new transmission cross member or buy one from a vendor
This is what i did.
It may be a pain in the ass, but it will be worth it.

On Another note, once you buy the adapter, and a new twin stick shifter for the Dana 20, you will be more than halfway to the price of purchasing an atlas 2 transfer case. you may want to look into buying an atlas 2. it was spendy. I paid $2500 from WH and had to wait 7 weeks but man is it nice....The atlas 2 bolts right to the 4r70w keeping the overall length closer to stock than using an adapter to the dana 20. saves close to 2 inches which has a couple benefits.
