Hello everyone, my 77 bronco, auto C4, dana 20 transfercase J shift won't disengage the 4wd or actually won't do anything. I can move the shifter forward, backwards but it seems like it isn't engaging anything as it shifts smoothly. I just read about the reverse method and will be trying it but anything I should be checking or looking for? Thank you

I have more questions than answers.
Have you checked visually to see if the front is engaging and releasing as you move positions with the shifter?

Are you getting low range?

Have you removed the boot and watched the rods while moving the shifter?

You need to physically see or turn the front drive line by hand to be sure. Until then we are just guessing if it is even working.

Are you trying to shift while sitting still on asphalt? My Dana's have always liked moving between 4 hi and 2 hi.

I got it figured out. Read through a bunch of previous threads and internet info. Had to do the EB shimmy, get it moving and shift it. Will be swapping to twin stick as in my reading it's the best solution to not deal with this J shifter.
