Keep the 5.0 or go Coyote?

I just purchased a 1977 Bronco. The previous owner was very talented and restored and converted this Bronco in 2008. Everything works just as it should and runs well.

I have a little different vision for this 77, I am going to have the body dipped and then painted Dark Grey.

I have seen low mileage Coyote drivetrains offered on a site, they state that they include everything from the serpentine to the rear of the trans, all parts from the same car that had rear end damage.

The question now is;
A) Save the money, keep the 5.0, add headers and get a good tune or
B) Buy the Coyote package, and have a much bigger smile ?

The thing that scares me about the Coyote is how much more will I need to make this work?

From your garage pics, your Bronco looks very nice, and with that Explorer 5.0 it must run great. I wouldn't take that apart to do a Coyote motor or paint. Just keep using it. You'd be money ahead if you sold this one and started another project that wasn't already finished. Seems a shame to change this one. It's too nice! JMO.

If you want a different color and coyote, sell your truck and buy one that needs paint and has a manual 3 speed, then do the changes.

Put the thousands in suspension work. That'll put a smile on your face

Leave the motor.

Repaint the top and flares. Or take it out scratch it up first, then paint it whatever color you want, cause after paint goes on its really hard to take it out and run branches down the side.

Thanks for the input, I am hoping that seeing the advice in writing is enough to over power the voice echoing inside my head, yes the crazy voice :)

and thanks for the comments on the Bronco it is nice, but I am going to paint it for certain, then AMP research powersteps, bilstein shocks and progressive springs. Those things are for certain, drivetrain changes will either be none, keep the 5.0 but change trans to 4r70w, or do the Coyote swap.

Thanks again for the comments :)

Buying an engine from a vehicle with rear end damage can be risky, if it was hit from the rear the impact can transfer to the crankshaft.

If you can see the vehicle before the engine is removed is one thing, but sight unseen?

Swap the tranny, then do some performance mods to the 5.0. Unless you have very deep pockets, then I say go for it!

I vote for keep this rig and while you're enjoying it have BC broncos build a coyote rig just the way you want it!

trust me on this one, enjoy the bronco. time doing upgrades could be used to drive and enjoy the truck. I am about 5 years into a dipped body frame off, and it will be a while before I enjoy my bronco again. I have spent too much time dreaming/planning of bigger and better and I have paid the ultimate price for a bronco enthusiast, not being able to drive my truck.

Very true, my Bronco sat for more than 3 years till I was able to enjoy it.

Double ditto the be cautious with an accident motor. Unless they can turn it on, run it for half and hour and let you see the codes it throws, I would avoid. Drop the dime and buy the kit or at minimum a motor someone else swapped a bigger motor for.

I think commonsense has finally slipped past my careless subconscious , I talked with my builder and someone doing the coyote swap, I think I will keep the 5.0 and see if I can pick up some bolt on HP with headers and a tune.
This will cut shorter the project and allow for other upgrades / changes, such as a complete overhaul of the 9" . 31 spline axels w 4/56 gear and add rear disc brakes; 3.5 inch progressive rate lift with Bilstein 5125 shocks; still deciding on the 4R70W or keep the NV3550; and new gaskets and seals for the D20.

Again, thanks for the comments, keep them coming.

Just so you know....

I have a perfectly running Explorer with a 4R70w trans in it. I am parting out the whole rig.

PM me if you are interested in it.

Too bad we are so far apart, I would take a lot out of the explorer for my Ranger pickup that I have it was in good shape. Bummer because I am looking for an Explorer for this very reason. :(

As per the original poster question, I am contemplating the same questions with my truck. Have decided to most likely put in a Stroked 347 with a 6spd tranny from Rockland Auto. I would keep it the way it is personally.
