Lean/Rich on a Quadrajet

I think my Bronco is running really rich after converting to a Carter 4070 fuel pump. There is a lot of smoke coming out of the tailpipe and it smells like unburned fuel, not burning oil.

How do you change the ean/rich adjustment on a Quadrajet?

you probly need to install a fuel pressure regulator and set it to 4 to 6 lbs pressure, the carter pumps have to much pressure and push the inlet needle off the seat and cause flooding

That makes sense. I thought the Carter 4070 was normally 4-6 psi, but I must be wrong. If I can get it started it runs great at higher rpms, but when I coast to a stop it dies on me. I lifted off the air cleaner and it smelled like gasoline. Definitely too much fuel.

Off to the store to get a fuel pressure regulator.

If it is as rich as you describe, there is also a chance you got some trash (usually a sliver of rubber from a fuel line as you slip it on the barb) to the carb. Holds the needle and seat open a little and causes excessivly rich problems.

Do check fuel pressure before just throwing a regulator on it. There is also a chance the pump got mislabled and is the higher pressure model as well.

I thought about that, but the filter at the carb should have taken care of that. I have a fuel filter before the pump and one at the carb. I took the one at the carb out and it was clean. I replaced it anyway and still had the problem.

Did you get the press regulator yet? I found a Holley reg in my garage you can have. Even has a guage on it.
