This is the sad part of that article...."No federal agency has shown interest in this case..."
So the local cops go as far as they can with their limited resources, and then...nothing more will happen.

Apparently another guy contacted News 2 about same thing happening to him when he "bought" a 68 Camaro online as well.

Unfortunately, this is the way it is. I tried to purchase a planter monitor on a farm forum, turned out it was a complete scam and I was out my $1800. My bad, I should have done a better job verifying. I wrote to admin, not even a reply. I had some electronic components listed on the same forum, and was contacted by someone who seemed pretty eager to purchase them. Freshly wary, I let him know he could call to discuss. I got someone with an accent calling from MN. Horrible call quality, ended up hanging up because I couldn’t make out what he was saying. After a few back & forth texts, he wrote, “what’s your last price?” and that he would send a check for 30% over my asking price for my trouble shipping it. I called him out on scamming and blocked his number and forgot about it. A week later, got a bunch of texts and calls from another MN number that the check was on its way and tracking number said it would arrive tomorrow. Ignored him. Next day, I got a package from NJ with a corporate check inside from a business in AZ, but nothing else. I looked up the company on the check and called their accounting department and asked if they had any idea what it was for. The lady I talked to laughed and said that someone had stolen one of their checks and was copying it and sending them all over the country. Their local police could do nothing more for them, saying if they actually could catch the person, he would be immediately set free anyway and they couldn’t get any federal help.

People keep running the scams because they know little if anything will actually be done. How many of you have reported obvious scammers or spammers to Facebook only to get the "after review we've found the item you reported doesn't go against community standards" response? One of the largest technology companies in the world refuses to do anything about people being scammed and de-frauded on their site. I'm amazed that there isn't a massive class action lawsuit against Facebook for all the scammers they allow to perpetuate their site.

There's a local general contractor here in my town who's scammed half a dozen people out of over a million dollars collectively. Complaints have been filed with the district attorney, but they send out the "after reviewing your complaint, we've decided to take no action at this time" form letter. Same evidence is submitted to the CA Secretary of State complaint department regarding the LLC he's using to run these scams. Same letter received from them. Mind boggling.
