You probably should have put this in the tech section, you would get more traffic equaling more advice.
Are you looking at a 40' type of job or a 2' job. Big difference in what it will take. I was always surprised to see in person trail rigs I had seen in magazines. They always looked rough up close while looking great in the magazine. Not like the show cars. Which is your goal?
Many things have been painted using a 30 gallon. HPLV guns help, a bigger compressor makes life easier. Clean dry air is the most important aspect. Don't use hoses that have had oil through them and buy the best dryer/filter you can.
I'm no painter, I've only painted one vehicle in a real booth and that was over 30 years ago. I have done some other vehicle painting, I once did a truck topper in my backyard about 40 years ago and it still looks great. The harbor freight purple paint guns, that you used to be able to buy for under $10 have painted many vehicles. Plenty of utube videos about them. I have a couple and they are a great value. I also have a SATA gun which is much better and the price difference reflects it.
The HF guns are cheap enough they can be treated as throw aways. If you spend more on thinner to clean the gun you might as well throw it away or keep it as a primer gun. They also have disposable cups for them.
Prep is everything in painting. The best painter in the world will look mediocre with bad prep. A mediocre painter will look pretty good with fantastic prep work. Good lighting, a home made booth pulling out air and filters for incoming help but aren't required depending on the level of job you want.
Others hopefully will chime in with better info and maybe a correction.
All this is based on you doing it yourself since you will be very lucky to find someone to do it for your price that will be a better painter than yourself.
