I found an np435 in the pile of stuff that came with the '72 (square bolt pattern/28 spline = 2wd model). Is this worth trying to do anything with?
I was thinking to try my hand at a rebuild on it this winter, but it sounds like adapters, etc. would make it more trouble than its worth.

I was even daydreaming about the 203/205 doubler trick but that sounds like an even bigger hassle. I don't mind building a two headed baby but the adapters seem like they're going to add up $$$ fast...

That 435 is about the easiest 4 speed swap there is. Only 1 adapter. Not sure how cheap you can go. I know people who spent more to have a 3 speed rebuilt then it cost to swap in a 435. Shop around, you can find the adapter for less then "list price", but they just can't advertise it. MAP (Minimum Advertised Price) agrements, common is speciality retail markets.

435 is easier and cheaper than a doubler and will give you better crawl rates than your three speed and doubler.

The adapter and a 6 cyl intermediate housing are the only things required to do the $#% swap. I am doing it right now and myself and Bax both have an extra intermediate housing if you need one. The adapter is gonna cost you between $200-$400 dollars. Bax would be a good one to ask about the doubler setup he is runninmg it and would have good information on the subject.

A cheaper thing is to get another NP435.
Get one from a 78/79 bronco that has a 205 bolted to the back of it.
Then just run the 205 and add the 203 when $$$ comes.

So the np435 bolts to the 3spd bell housing, and the 6-cyl intermediate and adapter go between the 435 and the transfer case, right? Sounds like I may have a choice regarding the xfer case (np205 vs D20). What does the adapter go between; the xmission and housing or housing and adapter?

adapter bolts to back of tranny, 6 cyl intermediate housing and transfer case bolt to the adapter. you will love the low gear for control. don't expect to be speed shifting that puppy through town... it shifts like a freightliner:p
