Converting my 3 speed to a Toploader 4. Trying to make up for the higher gear ratio in 1st on the toploader when trailing and hill climbing. Any kits available for the D-20 to pull the gear ratio down from standard ratios. Names of and sources to purchase would be great!! If any.

bc broncos:
JP ROCK EATER TRANSFER CASE GEARS
The 4.86:1 JP Rock Eater gears make it possible to drive to the trail head and have the low gears to crawl on the trail. The 4.86 (lowest on the market) T-case gears give you a lower final gear ratio with 3.5:1 differential gears than you get with the stock 2.43:1 T-case gears and the 4.11:1 or 4.88:1 differential gears. Here is the math:

Stock 3 sp. 1st. gear = 2.99:1
Stock T-case low range = 2.43:1
Rock Eater low range = 4.86:1
4.11 Differential = 4.11:1
3.50 Differential = 3.5:1

3-Speed
1st Gear X T-Case
Low Range X Rear End
Ratio = Final Drive
("Crawl") Ratio
2.99 X 2.43 (Stock) X 3.50 = 25.43:1
2.99 X 2.43 (Stock) X 4.11 = 26.86:1
2.99 X 2.43 (Stock) X 4.88 = 35.46:1
2.99 X 4.86 (JP Gears) X 3.50 = 50.86:1
2.99 X 4.86 (JP Gears) X 4.11 = 59.72:1
2.99 X 4.86 (JP Gears) X 4.88 = 70.91:1

The difference in gear ratios is quite evident in this comparison of the stock 2.43:1 gear set (top) vs. the 4.86:1 JP Rock Eater gear set (bottom)

The JP Rock Eater gears are the highest quality gears made and will fit in the stock Bronco Dana 20 T-case with no machine work needed. No need to change the drive shafts and no need to cut holes in the floor for more shifters.

PRICING
4.86 JP Rock Eater gears (SET) $1,559.00

Wow, Blu72 thanks for the insights excellent. I am running 3.50's which still improves it by 100%. Are there any other good alternatives that might be a little less pricy. I am droping $1500.00 in the tranny, modified tail shaft housing and new shifter. I may have to wait if there are no alternatives. What would your second and third choice be and cost of each if there are any? Thanks for your insights. Sounds like you have definately looked into this in detail. Hope there are some alternatives??

You can change the case geras or you can go to a NP 435 trans. The 435 has a 6.69 to 1 1st gear. With out changing anything else and dtill running 3.50 gears you end up with 57.1 in low range 1st gear. I have run the Rubicon 12 times with this set up. Also the NP 435 is one tuff trans. You can check out the install on many web sites. There is a tech page on http://www.westcoastbroncos.com and it can give you some details. There is another gear choice for gears an that is Tera Lows and they are a lot less than rockeaters, you might want to check them out too.

Good luck.

Go with The NP 435 it is the cheapest route problably less than $600 total you cant beat that granny gear for the price or look at the NV4500 or the ford ZF trannies they cost more but have almost as good a first gear as the NP435 but have the added benifit of the overdrive

I really want to stay with the top loader. Like the short throw, all syncros etc. Any thought as to which might be the best choice between BC Broncos 3.15 and the Tera Lows. Where can I find pricing on the Tera? Thanks
The Atlas is down the road, way way down! ;D ;D ;D

Not to mention with the atlas you will have to shorten/lengthen your driveshafts

I believe DC4wd is selling the 3.15 TeraLow for the dana 20 for $490 right now. Check in the vendor section on POR to see if its still going on.

Indian Harbour Bch,
you'll like the top loader a lot. I just did mine, and love it - it's such a fast shifting tranny, and with a new Duff shifter and new poly everywhere my piece feels so tight. shifts like a sports car on 35" tires!! LOL
I hear the np435 is more truck-like, meaning slower shifts, and whatnot... to each they own, right??

All the 3.15/1 D20 gear sets are made by TeraLow. Just different vendors sell them.

Posted by: Desert Thrasher
Wild Horses sells a 3.15 low gear set for the d20. its only 800 bucks.

Do a search on Google or someplace for TeraLow. I found them for $650 at TrailQuest Jeep Parts

I installed my gears myself. The bearings were good and I left them alone. No need to to reshim just to change gears.

Hardest part was getting a bearing off the front. I remember using a hose clamp as a temperary spacer to while persuading it with a hammer.

As for the strength, I have heard of no one breaking them yet. The Jeep D300 set breaks all the time, but the Bronco D20 just keeps on living. Same company, just 2 different parts, like a Dana 30 and a 44. The 30 breaks and people expect it. The 44 lives.

I think the toploader with the rockeater gears might be the ultimate on/off-road setup.

I love my n.p.435, but can't deny that it shifts like a dump truck.
