Luk Clutch Disc Flywheel Interference

I just opened my new LUK 07-027 11" clutch kit for my stock 1970 302 3-speed and tried to install. The clutch inner disc (flanges that hold the springs) facing the flywheel side hits the flywheel. Looks like the inner disc OD is ~5" and the flywheel opening diameter is only 4.750".

Anyone experience this - what LUK disc do I need, or do I need to machine my flywheel opening to a larger diameter? Thanks Brian

I'm no expert on this, but when I upgraded from 3 Finger Clutch to the Luk 07-027 11" Clutch, I seem to remember reading that the older style flywheel that matched to the 3 finger clutch was not compatible with the Luk 07-027.

So I purchased a new flywheel. It appears somewhat wider at the center.

I just went through this. The older gent at the clutch shop remembered that the newer LUK style clutch discs interfere with the older style flywheels and that the old flywheel would have to be machined to accept it. Since I was having the flywheel re-surfaced anyway it was just a matter of having it done. The other option is to buy a later model flywheel in the correct balance that already has that bit of extra machining done.

Thanks all for your comments - I just machined the flywheel opening to 5.125 diameter. Allows ample disc hub clearance now. The LUK kit is impressive with 5 different pilot bushings, one bearing type, new throwout bearing and a alignment tool. Looks like good quality stuff. Looking forward to getting my ride back together.

I agree, it seems to be a very complete kit. The only thing it was missing is the clip/"clutch fork spring" (WH#8262). Just FYI. Easy to forget that part. Ask me how I know.

I love mine, so much smoother than the old 3 finger style and a warped flywheel.

Me too. Had I not bought the clutch from a local clutch shop (Feltons clutch) that has been around since the 50's, I would have been in the same situation.
The older machinist brought it to my attention, he also looked at my new clutch disc and asked what it was going in. When I told him a 72 Bronco, he told me that when they were new chattering clutches were fairly common, then he asked if I had a few minutes to wait, He took my new disc and removed the friction material that was on it and installed what he called "my own design" . Clutch is perfect now. Always try to shop local when possible. You may learn something.
