Magnaflow 2 into 1, way louder than expecting

About a year ago I swapped out my stock exhaust for a 2 into 1 Magnaflow. Granted I also installed some long tube headers.

I knew is was going to be loud. Funny enough I chose this over a Flowmaster 40 series because I kept hearing that it would be quieter but with good sound still.

Well let me tell you I feel like it's about as loud as running open headers.

I do have a turndown coming straight out of the back of the muffler.

So I actually have the Flowmaster 40 Series still in the box. I like to hear my 302, but I want to turn down the volume just a click or two.

Do I:
A) ditch the turndown, and put a longer pipe on it?
B) replace the MagnaFlow with the Flowmaster? (I keep hearing this would actually be LOUDER)
C) Don't suggest another muffler. I don't want to spend money right now, but thank you.

What are the dimensions of both mufflers?
And what are the inlet and outlet sizes?

Hmm I don't know the dimensions of the flowmaster off hand but the magnaflow is 5x8. 2.5 in, 3 out

What length is it?
Might be that the magma flow you have is a short one, which might explain it being louder than expected.
But no matter what, the turn-down is not helping. Especially if you don’t have a lot of insulation inside.

Just measured them both. The Flowmaster is 13" long. The Magnaflow (the one that's on) is 14" long

do option A. Then if it is still too loud add a glass pack resonator after it or even before it. You won’t get the glass pack crackle, it will just make it quieter

I did option A. It's perfect now. Quieter at idle and cruising so I can talk to my wife, and still gets nice and loud if I want to step on it.

Here’s before. Sounded macho but the drone in the cab was not cool.

Added some tailpipe. Still sounds good but a little weak at idle but my wife and kids are happier now.

laffycaffi - Thank you for videos, I have the James Duff 2 into 1 system with JBA shorty headers and the Flowmaster 40. It's very loud and the highway drone is horrible so I've been looking at replacing the muffler with a Magnaflow in hopes of toning it down as much as possible without loosing the classic built 302 hotrod sound. After listening to your video and reading other comments I may just add a resonator somewhere in the system to keep the muscle car sound but turn the volume down. If anyone else has some tips please let me know.

Just saw this thread. I have a slightly longer Magnaflow with the 2.5 in and 3 out single, with tailpipe run all the way out stock location on pass side. Built 400. It's a pretty aggressive sounding setup and has a very distinctive "drone" at about 55 mph that's a bit more than I'd like but tolerable. I can imagine how it would sound without the long tailpipe.

Reading through the thread I was like, well it would help if there were vids. Boom delivered! I like the sound of the after, I just loathe the idea of having the pipe exit in the stock location. Because mine are bashed to hell.

I've considered doing dumps but apparently the consensus is that sucks. Oh well. I've got long tube headers with true dual Flow 40s.

I'm itching for a different sound. I've even considered Spintech.

I run a 14” Magnaflow with JBA shorties and 3” in/out, and it exits over the rear axle angled slightly down and to the passenger side. It’s not overly loud ( the tires are actually louder lol) and that’s with a healthy 351w soon to be a 408w.

I would go with option A. I have BCB headers and the same muffler with a turndown and it is Much more quiet than yours.
