Master Cylinder question

I've currently got a Drum/Drum setup on my '74 and the master cylinder is starting to leak slightly. I plan on doing a front disc conversion in the near future and I'm wondering if a Disc/Drum master will work with my Drum/Drum setup until I do the swap? Basically, I don't want to have to buy two master cylinders if I don't have to. I searched back several posts and didn't find anything

I believe the drum brakes need a residual valve in the master cylinder to work correctly. Disk brakes don't need this. You could buy a Drum/Drum MC now and just remove the valve when you go to disks on the front. But I would just buy a Drum/Drum MC now and Disk/Drum one later. They are very inexpensive.

Nope the above gentle men is right you must have a drum/drum MC for a all drum setup. the nice thing is when you make your change you can alter a all drum master to a disc drum master by removing the residual pressure valve. this mod has been written up, and I have done it it takes about 3 minutes to do.

edit I dissagree on the cost, my masters cost me all of 46.00 new for a "configurable" master cylinder.

My MC for a drum/drum was $34 and I got a $15 core for my other one, so $19...at O'reilly's check if out if you have one close by

I disagree, my drum/drum master never had the residual valve in it. When I went to disk in front, I was surprised that it was not in there... My drum brakes worked as good as any drum setup could.

Anyway, why not just upgrade to disk now and only have to bleed brakes once? Don't forget to dump the 'H' block, I added an adjustable proportioning valve to fine tune the rear's.

Needa, I hear 'ya on that, but there is that cash thing.....I still haven't decided on which route I'm going to take on that yet(all new or used spindles/backing plates+ new stuff) My rig was in storage for over 10 years when I bought it and I've slowly been getting all the safety issues taken care of which equals a nice cash drain somtimes. I just dropped it off today at my buddies tranny shop so he can go through the C-4 for me. That's the longest road trip it's had in 10 + years and it's only about 5 miles ;D
