Just wondering what it might cost me to have the Entire Hood done in Matte Black? Has anyone Spray Bombed their Hood with decent results? Thanks

You might want to price having it wrapped. A big panel will be harder to spray can with good results.

Let us know what you find out. I have a new hood coming and was thinking of the same color until if/when I decide to have the entire thing painted. I am going to check after the holiday and if it is too much, I will spray myself with a HVLP. I don't really care how it turns out, just don't want a snow white hood.

I will do that. there are a few places in this area that do wraps. I also deliver freight to a customer that did a complete vehicle wrap. I'm going to see what they would charge me. a single sheet of Matte/dull black shouldnt be that costly??

Matte black is fairly easy to spray You probably wouldnt notice runs in it anyhow. So what hit up wally world get you a couple cans of the .99 cent flat black and go to town. If you dont like how it turns out then wrap it. Not sure how easy it would be to get a flat black wrap but it shouldnt be to expensive a 4x5ft camo sheet is only about $100

Thanks, i think if wrapping gives me sticker shock i,m going the spray bomb route. There is a Maaco place a mile from the house. I might ask them for a quote. How bad can they screw up a single color like Matte black.

Most likely you'll get sticker shock from the price they charge you at macco for the paint job vs the wrap. Like I said go pick up some flat black its only going to cost you a few $$ and spray it yourself. There's a reason a lot of people paint there trail rigs flat black.

I got a quote a few months back to black the center of the hood at a bodyshop... $300 if I brought him the hood. I tried the plastidip, but didn't tape it right. I still want it done...

My hood has the Black Sticker/decal that a Previous owner got from possibly Ebay which looks decent. My problem is the Clearcoat that is flaking/peeling off and looks terrible. Someone tried to wet sand it or compound it off and it looks worse. No one was able to match the paint color close enough so its going to be all black.

I used a compressor and spray gun, but shot $10/quart Rustoleum satin black on mine (satin has a little sheen to it, but not much). Did a 4:2:1 mix (paint:thinner:hardener) and put several coats on the center of the hood and center of the grill and still have some left, so one quart would definitely cover a full hood. Easy to do, especially if you remove the hood.

You can see the satin still reflects some of the light, but you can get flat black in the quart size too.

I have used John Deere Blitz Black under my hood, in engine bay and on my grill. It is about $35/gal and very easy to spray with a HF paint gun. It gives a nice satin finish, no too flat.

How long have you had that paint on the bronco? How does it seem to hold up to fading for UV rays? Looks good!

Thanks! I painted it back in February, and the Bronco is garaged most of the time. I used the "outdoor" Rustoleum (for doors, furniture, equipment, etc.) so its supposed to be a little more UV tolerant than plain Rustoleum, and the hardener (got it at Tractor Supply) is supposed to help with preventing UV fade too. From reading on other forums before I painted, other guys who used the same stuff had minimal to no fade after 3 to 4 years of full weather/sun exposure. I figured in another 4 to 5 years I'd be repainting the Bronco anyway, so it was a good/cheap option. With the 4:2:1 mix it sprayed and covered very nice and smooth!

Read a bunch of good things about the John Deere Blitz Black (mentioned above) on other forums too, probably would have used that, but I would have had to order it and wait for it to come in, the Rustoleum was available at my local Lowe's (easy at the time and good for future touch-up if needed)...

How smooth is the hood surface? if you can feel where the clear coat has flaked off you will need to sand it down regardless of what you decide to uses. If it is smooth surface, plasti dipping will be one of the easiest ways to go and it is pretty cheap.
