Ok I know really nothing about Moab. I look on the map and I can find the small city and it looks like there are roads / trails going all over. Is that it. You got there and take a trail and just run with it? Or is there a designated place you have to go. it's one of those trips I want to make but I really know nothing about the place.

Hey Bax,

We keep going back... so we're a little partial.

Moab offers a lot... not just trails, although that's what draws a lot of folks. Trails range from easy to more than difficult, and if you're height-challenged, that's another eye-opener.

There are some great trail books/maps. Trail heads are generally well marked. You can almost always find folks to run trails with if you're there on your own.

We're far from wheeling experts; but, if you'd like other information about things to do, or the area in general, PM me.

Jeff

Hi Bax in February I made my 19th trip. There are thousands of miles of roads and trails from paved to as hard as you want to go and from a few hundred yards to a few hundred miles. There are some excellent guide books, my favorite is written by Charles Wells. It's very well written and easy to follow. I prefer to not go for an event just a few buddies or alone and go have a great time. Your always welcome to go with us and I can let you know dates very early and I'd be delighted to play tour guide.

The wheeling is much different than anything you've ever done. The hard trails are not hard like at Windrock the chances of massive carnage and damage is much less. However I will say most of the difficult rated trails are not difficult like what we are used to they are much more mental than physical and it's the mental that gets people in trouble. If you have issues with heights it will be amplified X10. The landscape is spectacular.

I love the place and could go on for hours. PM your email if you want pics, I have a LOT

Roger, we've only been there twice during the Bronco Safari but like Jeff said there's lots of marked trails. There's a fee you pay to the county(?) that allows you access to lots of trails right out of town and there's others that you just access from town. Some are a few blocks, a few miles and several miles. The sandstone rock allows you to go lots of places with great traction. Arches National Park even has four wheel roads you can take. Jeff has been there many times so he could answer more questions. The first time we went I told Janice as long as I'm able to I want to go back. Enjoy.

And I guess I could clarify. There's millions of acres of public land that is open to use on established trails, most of them are free. There's the sand flats area that is managed by the county that is a pay to play, Area BFE is a pay park you have to pay a gate toll to run Pritchett Canyon and all of the national parks have fees but even with all of that the access is free and there is way more free than pay. A vastly different experience than wheelin in the Midwest and East.

Oh and a road worthy, legal rig makes it way more fun

Agree with all the above. Moab is a bucket list place for any off road enthusiast - whether 4WD, ATV/UTV, motorcycle or mountain bike. The trails are largely on what is locally known as "slick rock", but this is a misnomer. The rock surface is more grippy than sandpaper allowing for traction you'd never think possible.
Arches NP right outside of town has some spectacular views & the town itself is a pretty cool little place. Some decent restaurants & lots of tourist shops. Plenty of lodging available as long as you're not going during a Bronco or Jeep event.

Well it will have to be planed out pretty well. Its 2166 miles from where I live. Thats 3-12 hour days driving. Talk about having all of your junk in good working order!!! To drive that and break something right away would be a crushing defeat. My longest drive out west is OCBR. If I do this it would be good to do it the week before or after OCBR. I see no reason to drive the distance and not do both. Cant pull a camper and a trailer. I could load the truck with parts but you know what I break I wont have. I love adventures. Thanks for the info. I will have to see if any of these events are close to each other.

Hey Scoop, how come your picture is sideways? Same spot, same DA smart(?) phone as me? I posted 2 different pictures but prove that by what's on here. Really fun getting to that spot.

Bax, my wife was having the same issues. She begrudgingly rode with me the first day always leaning towards the middle of the Bronco. On the second morning she was asking which trails are we doing today. She will like it.
Yeller, are you going this year? I am going to arrive on Sunday this year so I have the whole week. I will need to join up with somebody.

LOL - I'm not sure why it posted sideways. My pics usually post fine on CB. But I left it that way since it made it look more like your pic!

Roger, I've been to Moab a few times but only seriously wheeled there once for a week. (Met Jeff10 there actually!) I went with a group of MEB folks - 2 of which were not comfortable with the heights. They had a great time wheeling most of the time but they did have a tough time on the shelf roads. And most of the trails have at least some shelf road areas on them - some scarier than others. The photos are from Moab Rim trail and there is a spot you can drive right up to the cliff edge.

Moab has a 1-10 trail rating system with 1 being the access roads and 10 for buggies only. Moab Rim trail is rated 7 due to the switch backs on first part of the trail as you climb to the top. We ended up coming down after dark! That was fun! However, their rating system is based on Jeep capabilities and a decently capable Bronco will be able to do harder trails than you would think when going by their ratings.

Not sure she would get over it. She has never liked high stuff. Things with a view. She often wants to get out before a hill climb. The fact that I'm not coming back down and walking up hill sucks is the only thing that keeps her in the seat. She is only having fun after its over. She kinda likes to be scarred but only likes it after she feels safe. Sounds weird but Im never sure if she is liking it or not. She doesn't like to go fast either, but she does like it when its over.
