So, the batteries in them only last so long... :)

Does anybody have a good Moates Qtrhorse that has a removeable battery that can get me by for a 2 weeks?

I know, crazy request. Then I can tell a bit more of my story. lol

I learned it the hard way too.

Speak to eifguy. He will burn you a chip of your QH tune. No need for it anymore. He also updates the diodes in the ECU, which need to be done every 5 years.

I kinda figured I wasn't the only one. :)

I've done so many mod's to the engine that we (I) kept delaying having Garry burn a chip. So 2 yrs ago I dropped a different engine in. Year plus of shoulder and a couple things that needed doing before the final tune, then, then... well, nothing but my fault. lol

Garry knows.

Caps are good in the ECU.(diodes last for decades +). Caps last 10+ yrs easy but batteries last about 5-6. lol

Hmmmm, I've got a Moates Qtrhorse in my '66 I bought from Tony Ramos. Now you've got me concerned about mine...I didn't know about batteries needing replacement.:(

Basic explanation:

Battery powers the Qtrhorse so it can be tuned, datalogged, etc. After the correct tune is determined then your tuner should burn you a chip. The burned chip is permanent and does not need a battery so you are good "forever".

I found one so I should be going in a couple days.

They have a coin battery socket on the QH. Just have to pull the PCM, open it up and change it. Not sure if you'll lose the program at that point.

The battery on Qtrhorse up until appr 2016 were all soldered into place. Meaning you can't remove the battery without using a pin sized vacuum soldering pencil because it is soldered DIRECTLY into the PC board. You are soldering next to 48 pin IC chips. Not for a Weller soldering gun. lol

The battery is soldered to the PC board and is appr 1/4" away from the board.

Newer model Qtrhorse have battery holders that allow you to remove the battery w/o having to desolder on the PC board.

WHen you remove voltage from the Qtrhorse you lose your tune... least mine does. All you do is reload it from the laptop and you are good.

The right way to do this is like I mentioned before. Use the Qtrhorse to dial in the tune. Have your tuner burn you a Qtrhorse chip to permanently drive your ECU with the parameters your engine needs if it isn't stock.

Correct me if I'm wrong here but this is the simplified explanation.

I trailered a Qtrhorse home tonight. :)

Datalogging it tomorrow. Then have Garry review the tune. If he gives the OK in a day or two my buddy gets his permanent burned chip and I put his old Qtrhorse in mine.

Then after Garry reviews the tunes at the sand dunes in August at the RdUp I will feel confident that I'm dialed in.

Finally got the borrowed Qtrhorse in, loaded my tune and I'm running. 3.02V on the new battery in the borrowed Qtrhorse sure beats .348V on my old battery.

Are they fixing yours already? I’d be willing to replace the battery in it for you if you want. I might have an extra one but I don’t think I do.

Appreciate the offer Eric. I am running, my buddy has a permanent chip burnt so he's good and after another trip to the sand dunes this summer (Oregon RdUp) I should be dialed in and ready for a burned chip.

I'm going to return my old one with the dead battery to Garry. I'm sure he'll just solder in a new battery holder with an easily replaceable battery so the next guy who needs a Qtrhorse will be good for 5 yrs or so (just not more than 6yrs). lol

Appreciate it tho! :)
