I am going from a 170 to a 302! Do I have to get new towers or just new motor mounts? Also is there a cheaper way to do the cross member for an aod conversion than buy the $150 setup off toms?
The towers hold the motor mounts. You will need the new towers so the new V8 motor mounts to have (the correct) place to bolt ino.
You can always modify or build your own transmission mount. Not sure how you are doing the 4R70W conversion (AA adaptor AOD to D20, Ford 4WD tailhousing to NP205, ZF adaptor, etc.) and that makes a difference in what will work as well.
I don't think the Tom's crossmeber will work, I think that is for the AA kit using Bronco style transfer case bushings. The late model style transfer case bushing is very different.
