I use the shorter fl-300 size filter since I have an oil cooler spacer under the filter. They might make your oil changes much easier. Napa gold FIL 1068 it is only 4.338 tall.

Thanks. I find that it's mostly the diameter of the filter that necessitates a convoluted path down to the drain pan!

To learn how to install an oil filter?
Perhaps I should clarify...

I've met & worked with more than one professional tech who thought the right way to install an oil filter was to crank on it until his fingernails were about to come off, and then twist it with a filter wrench until the paint was coming off. That's at independent shops AND at the Ford dealership.

So I asked. I didn't make a big deal out of it - I just asked. If you think I should have already known how your truck is built and what you've been doing to it for the past 30 years... %)

I use a big piece of aluminum foil, to cover the steering and front end. When oil spills out of the filter, the foil sheet guides it to the drain pan.

Mark

They cost a little more than tin foil, but this handy little piece has really made my oil changes a lot cleaner in recent years:

Here's what I wrote:
In other words, the filter won't tighten fully because it stops turning before the gasket has fully seated.

No idea how you extrapolated "So, you know, then I had to really crank that sucker down!"

I try to write as clearly and succinctly as possible when posting questions here, just to avoid confusion.
