Should I grind it down again? I am going to keep this up until Hell freezes over. ROP welding school has a several month waiting list and I have got too much other stuff that I have to do first.

I have got nothing better to do in my bit of spare time out of school and work but cut and weld on Scrap. My mother named my Bronco scrap because I sell scrap metal every time I accumulate a truck load of it.

That should be fine and ready for some filler. You could try to get it flatter if you want. Just use a quality filler like Rage. Those dents in the top of it will suck to get out, the tailgates are pretty stout.

I am thinking of cutting a little hole and putting a steel bar in there and pulling the dent out. Then I would weld it lose and grind it flush.

Thanks,

I really appreciate help. There are plenty of welders around me who can't teach me to weld. I only have access to a couple of Lincoln arc welders because my father is wood worker and wood workers have to fabricate tools out of steel occassionally. He welded things of square tubing but never did any automotive welding.

I find it easier to weld chasis parts with a stick welder than to mig weld thin sheet metal. I watched one of my professors tig weld aluminum foil with a tig welder. I did not begin to fathom what I saw. I could only dream to be able to weld up guns and jewelry. But I can stick weld two 3/8" thick steel peices together.

I am probably going to run Scrap into the ground for a few years and rebuild it again, only better. I don't have any remorse about that.

No. I did this repair with a Lincoln Mig welder, SP 100. I used .23 or .26 or around there in wire size. I had the oxygen-acetaline set at 22-. I had like 1,200 psi in the tank. The heat was set on "D" and the wire speed was set 4-1/2.

Hey man, don't be embarassed at all! it is a start and can only get better. You will get it right im sure. ;D

By the way, since you say you have some scrap around and I don't mean the Bronco, you should practice on that. Good Luck!

I had a brain fart. I did not use oxy-acetaline. I used a one tank of argon and carbon dioxide. Oxy-acetaline shoots flames! Duh! That's what I burned my self with from chin to lead fishing weights. I wear an auto-darkening welding mask and a weldingjacket which I burned through. The leather sleevs are good but the nylon torso secion burns or melts through.

I suppose I could take the steel I buy and make stuff out of it before I weld on my Bronco. I did make a Chevy tail gate that was custom fit to my Bronco. I scrapped it because it was aweful. I think I am going to make a gas-tank just to scrap. I read that somewhere as something to do before doing any real fabrication. The idea was to build gas tanks that are going to be scrapped and not used anyway. Car gas tanks are square but will be leak when made by an inexperienced fabricator. Motorcycle gas-ganks are harder. Both get scrapped until the skill improves. I don't care either way. I don't mind scrapping something if it is a sacraficial piece for the overall project.

I cut West Coast Bronco's radius arms brackets off and welded stock brackets back into stock location. I expect to rebuild it again in a few years.

Bewere of molten steel running down your chest! It does leave cigarette butt burns all over!

I am no means a good welder but am pretty handy with a angle grinder because of it. I have a 140c and am on setting G and about 4 on wire speed using .25. Not sure if increased heat would work better but your weld doesnt look like it has much penetration. As far as finishing a weld i will start with a grinding disk then 60 grit sanding wheel.

For what new tailgates cost, the stock gates' propensity to rust and how tweaked that one is - I would buy a new one and save yourself some heartache.

For one not timid of a heartache, why not try to repair shot-out tail gates?
