I paid $42 for the alignment bar at a place northwest of downtown Dallas. best price I could find without having to pay shipping. They say Fastenal is a good source, but they only "have 6 in stock in the entire country." and was gonna cost about $100 for me to pick up.

You might say that's a little much for what I'm doing, but I've got a Dana 50 that I might just turn into a 609/960. Whichever they call it. really need to get some new tubing to start it with though. And some old worn out unit bearings to build alignment biscuits for the outer ends to get it all straight. This idea might make the Super duty D50 worth something...lol.

Cant E bay at work but Ill check it out!

Where did I see those end pieces that actually slide into the tubes?

Got mine off eBay but they don't slide inside the tube. From quick performance.

Moser makes slide ins...However I don't know if they can be used to convert from small bearing to big bearing?

If you start with a housing like mine, slide ins may not be the way to go. How much are they?

I put new ends on my '76 F150 9" housing, and it had the typical 3/16" bend in the tubes...no biggie. The alignment bar is there to keep the housing ends inline with the differential bearings, so I didn't worry about straightening the tubes...I just welded on my truss and called it good since it doesn't impact anything one way or the other.

Rather than a jig, I used a bare 9" center section with the gasket I intend to run (lube-locker) in place, Mittler Bros alignment bar and some big, heavy gorilla tack welds and then welded it out in opposite quadrants in two passes, a root pass and a cover pass.

In tonight's news, Nyles will be excited to hear that I ordered a Grizzly for this project from WH (thanks Jim!). The Spartan will be returned and I won't have to pull the chunk out of my big bronco.

Not gonna knock "lunch box" lockers. They have worked for me when I couldn't afford to buy a whole new carrier, but there is no comparison between the "lunch box" lockers and a complete replacement case like a Detroit or Grizzly. Whole new ball game of strength and performance.
Kudos

Be sure to get good overlap on your starts and stops so they don't leak. or are you going to cap them when your done?

It's overlapped very well and it's so hot it's burning the tips off my torch too. Now I've got to dig broken threads out before I can go any further. I'll add some pics here later.

Definitely need to cap them. I don't trust one bead with this much weight.
