I've been on the look out for a flat tappet block for a rebuild for my stock 302 74 Bronco project. I found a complete motor out a wrecked 1978 Ford Econoline that, supposedly, was professionally rebuilt and has only 30K miles on it. The owner says it was bored out 30 over and the 10/10 on the crank. I will be going over tomorrow to take a look. Can you guys give me some advice on what to look for, what to ask and whether this engine would work with my stock automatic C4.
Thanks for any help.

Yes the 78 302 will work fine. Really no different than your 74 block its mostly external stuff that are considered bronco only that will be the differance. ie oil pan/ Harmonic balancer, water pump, assesories. and a few other minor parts. all the bronco stuff will bolt on the 78 block. Even if you dont want to use all the bronco stuff its not a show stopper just may take some mods to make it all work. As to what to look for well just general external condition of the motor 30K miles is not all that much. So it shouldnt have much if any built up oil/dirt on it. Also take a wrench to make sure the crank turns over. Might also want to pull the spark plugs see how they look that will tell you how it was running.78 is not really a desireable year for a 302 IMO. At least from a performance stand point as it has most likely has the large 69cc heads but if it runs good, the price is right and it gets you on the road then its no big deal.

Does the guy have the receipts and build record from the shop that rebuilt the engine?

Thanks for the feedback. I'll definitely bring some tools to crank the engine and remove a spark plug or two. Not sure about the build sheet, but I'll check.
Thanks for your help. Headed out in an hour or so.

Pull the valve covers. Cleanliness, or lack of, in this area says a lot about how well the engine was cared for in regards to oil changes, etc.
