Hi im a 17 and I had just bought my first car and I had chosen to buy a 1979 ford bronco ranger xlt. But im having sooo many problems with it. To start out, when I had bought it the only way to get it running was to spray the carb with gum-off this got the truck started and while the engine was still warm I was able to turn it on and off with no problem but once I got home and let it sit for about 3 hours it wont start up. Mind you the man that I bought this from had the car sitting for 3 to 5 yrs and the last time it was inspected was back in '01. When I put the key in and turn it the engine is turning but not starting up some people tell me its my fuel pump/fuel flitter (which I don’t know were it is located) other say its the carb if any one has any suggestions on how to get my truck up and running im up to try anything. Also the fuel gauge does not work and I need help on knowing how to fix that also. Its a great truck but with a bunch of problems. You can email me with and suggestions at mvlv1412@yahoo.com thanks.

you need to make sure you have spark and fuel.
1. take off your air filter, climb inside that engine bay-plenty big, look down inside the carb, work the throtle by hand, look for fuel getting squirted from the jets. you may need a flashlight.
2. if no fuel, then remove the fuel line at the carb, get out of the bay and have someone crank the motor. it is a mechanical fuel pump so fuel should squirt out at you.
3. to check for spark, pull a plug, put the wire back on the plug, set it down where you can see it, and have someone crank he motor. should sprk the end of the plug.

these are just some very basic ideas for you to start with. good luck. bill

If the fuel has been sitting in it for that long you may have to drain and clean the whole fuel system. Try to get some fresh fuel to it and see if that helps. Just like 75 stated though make sure you have fuel and spark getting to the motor first . Beware of the Duraspark box also (sm. usually silver box about 6" by 6") They can go out. Check that at your local Autozone (they can test 'em) if you don't have any spark. I have a 79 and it runs great but I have been through the whole motor (with some help).
Another idea if you want it - drop the oil pan and clean it out well. It will give you a chance to see what the bottom side of the motor looks like and while you are down there replace the pick-up tube and screen to the oil pump. 2 years after I bought my 79 that screen pluged and snaped off the distributor gear leaving me stranded. I had changed the oil every 3K and it still happened. You never know . Good luck with it and let us know how it goes. FM
FYI I believe the fuel pump shoud be on the drv side front bottom of the motor.

If it has been sitting that long I would replace the fuel pump and filter and rebuild the carb. Not to mention replacing the plugs, wires, cap and rotor. The fuel pump is on the drivers side of the block. Just follow the fuel line from the carb and you will find it.
