New EB, trying to get everything tuned

The sacrificial zinc is what I have attached to the inside of my radiator cap (just learned that). How do I tell if it is time for it to be replaced?

Correction: mine is magnesium

You're supposed to replace them when the sacrificial metal is half depleted.
