spent much of Monday researching the overheating issue of the transmission in park, I really do not want to just pull it out and inspect, I will remove the VB and check all the servos while in the truck, I am waiting for the manual to get here. I have a feeling that since it sat for 5 months without fluid and some rain got in it, condensation might have made a valve/servo stick.

I will concentrate on the brakes and rear drive shaft, also the driver seat to see if I can go test drive it and see what the transmission does in gear.

spoke to Chuck at bauman and chances are I used the wrong spacer on the pump end, binding when the parking pin stops all from spinning.:-[

I plan to drop it next Saturday, inspect all parts, replace any damaged parts and re-assemble, making sure I measure and use the correct spacer.%)

He did not feel any damage should be done since It only boiled the fluid once. ;D

I was so worried about the EFI, I did not expect the transmission to have issues, I have re-built 3 AOD's, the only new item was the 4r70w internals.

Ordered a new maual and the oil pump spacer set, I remember that I did not measure this gap and used the spacer that came with it. Hopefully the one boil over of fluid did not ruin any hard parts, the tech from Bauman did not think so.

The positive thing about this, besides learning nor to swap in the 4r70w gears, is the test of removing the transmission, exhasut and cross members.

I will see how much energy I have after work and start the dissassembly.

GOt MY Bro lined up to drop the AOD, I am dying to see the internals to decide if I need to go get another at the boneyard, they have a 1/2 off sale next weekend, around 60 dollars for complete tranny, I might spend the time and disassemble it in the boneyard, find another 4r70w and get the internals again. worst case i can sell the internals or save them for a future build.

G,

Just went through the entire thread! Nice job on the EFI install. That is a HUGE victory getting the engine running and idling pretty nice as well. Keep it up and you'll be done in no time!

Thanks Brocoitis, I am starting to see the light ;D
The EFI was a big one.;D

I found the problem with the transmission overheating, when I changed the shift arm, I did not engage the shift lever with the valve body sliding valve. it was always in drive, when I would put in in park, the trans was the same as drive with the parking brake on, as soon as I would rev it would start to overheat. when I was in any other gear than park, it would rotate the transfer case.

Unfortunately I was pretty sure it had to be the clearances on the pump and intermediate clutches, so we dropped trans yesterday. after measuring it is actually loose, the intermediate is 19 thousands looser that the allowed range and the pump is 17 thousands.

The good news is that:
1- the cross member is easy to remove
2-the exhaust is easy to remove
3- i am certain to leave the clearances within spec this time.
4- there is no visual signs of damage, no shavings, the pan was super clean.

I will now wait for the pump thrust washer kist to get here, re install the itermediate clutch part and mic to spec, I have spare steels to get me where I need to be, 19 thousands to 30.

At least now I found the cause, I will admit that with the EFI working, and engine running as good as it did, I should have drooped the pan before the trans, but at least I got to test the R&R of the trans and transfer case.

OK, I fixed the tolerances and put the shift rod on the correct spot. I will torq the VB bolts and oil pump, new filter and pan gasket tomorrow after work and re install it on saturday,

Next after that will be shifter, tv cable, brakes and rear driveshaft. I want to test drive it ASAP, there is a 10 day vacation with wife and Kids to Oaxaca Mexico taht will get a little on the way, but I planed to start the engine after the trip, I am 4 weeks ahead of schedule, the EFI was pretty fast.

I been thinking on how to lift the transmission/adapter/transfer-case/cross member assembly back into the bronco.

I think I will use my BURRO with the hoist thru the transfer case lever hole in the floor of the EB, and also the floor jack for fine tuning. I will probably just have the help of my 16 year old (320 lbs 5'11 high school wrestler, wcw jajaja) so I got to make it easy.;D

I wil take pictures and update tomorrow. ;D

It was driving me nuts, i have rebuilt 4 aod's, 1 AODe and 2 727's (dodge) , by no means my first dance with an automatic, the AODe was a pain. I can now rest my troubleshooting brain and focus on getting the parts to hopefully call it done next weekend.

Then brakes, and a million little things to test drive it and then....... interior.... paint.... baja 1000 WOhooooo:cool:;D

Went to the Boneyard and took the forward clutch and A servo from a 90 t-bird SC trans, spent 1 hour taking it out and disassembling it,;D

I have decided to get new steels and frictions, a local trans shop has them, I will swing by in the AM.

My pleasure. Let me know how it drives, are you putting in the low gear set on the AOD?

I am hoping to finish the trans by Friday and install it in the AM Saturday, hopefully all is good and I can go back to other areas.

Stopped by the transmission parts store/rebuild place by my house. Got them to check all my clutch packs for damage and tolerance. I just had to buy steels and frictions for the forward pack and an oil pump gasket.

hopefully between today and Friday I can re-assemble and install Saturday morning.;D

Not sure yet? I know that I want to get it rebuilt for heavier use than originally intended. I was thinking of having them build it to the 4r70W specs. I want to use this as a daily driver plus some fun in the mountains. Not heavy wheeling, more logging roads and for hunting. What would you recommend?
Once I get this done, I will move into the EFI set-up. I got the SD EFI off an 88 lincoln. It was complete including the factory harness and computer for $120. Right now I am a bit intimidated by the magnitude of the harness? I have been trying to educate myself so it is getting better. Heck I just did a frame-up resto of the rig, how much harder can it get?:?

having NOT driven the bronco with the 4r70w low gears i can not say, but all my research says that having the lower 1st ans 2nd will make take offs easier for teh engine while still having the OD for highway.;D

I just finished the EFi install on my EB with the harness and computer from a 91 stang, it was easy, I really dreaded it. it took me about 10 hours to do, that included getting rid of ac, evap and egr systems. adding 4 fuses/relays instead of 2 ford used (pump and ecc) and soldering, taping and double heat shrinking every wire splice. I believe yours should be easier, no MAF to worry about.

Where did you find the wiring schematic that you posted? That looks very helpful.

In looking at your build I am concerned now that I will have to reroute my exhaust. I have long tube headers and dual exhaust routed out each side. I guess I will see when I get that far.

Also hoping my drivelines will work as is. They were new, installed by the PO when he installed the 5.5 inch lift. I now have 3.5 inch springs so here's to hoping!
