Hi,
I am wondering about steering linkages. At what point during a scratch build do better steering linkages make sense just for ‘durability sake’ or is this nonsense? I have searched and found a lot on the specifics, but little on the general concept. I am running custom (Deaver) +1.5” coils and leaves, Duff dual shocks, new urethane everywhere, 32” BFG all terrains, and a BC 4x4x2 steering box. I am about to freshen up the steering linkage and am torn between keeping it stocks (JBG tie rods + BC HD balljoints) or perhaps F150 over axle parts. My off road use will be light to moderate. I don’t mind making it more durable than I need, but not at the expense of bad steering geometry (I have made this mistake before on a FSB) and hard to find parts and, in general, more headache. Please let me know what you think.

The chebby 1-ton swap is by far the cheapest and best way to go hands down. Check out extreme customs website for all parts. Because of your small lift youll go with the tie rods under like stock. I wouldn't even do a drop pitman arm. TRE's for this kit are found at any parts store, but if your not a capable welder then you might get the entire kit from mine at extreme.

I was getting a lot of flex in my tie rod which was causing my steering issues - combined with worn ends. I was looking at replacing the entire linkage and I wanted it to be stronger so I would not be back in this position any time soon. I ended up going with the GM 1-ton setup with DOM links. It's beefy and the ends should be easy to find at any parts store. If you can weld the kits are relatively inexpensive but you will need a reamer too. I got my kit from RuffStuff on one of their sales. I went tie rod over at the same time so I had to add a trac bar riser to the cost of the install (from Wild Horses).

FYI what we refer to as the GM- 1 ton is the same as the Chebby 1-ton. And extreme customs and ruffstuff sells the same stuff. Just didn't want you to think we were talking two different options.
