Power Steering Question from a Newbie

I just purchased a used PS gearbox from another member of this board. I am going to rebuild it and install it on a bone stock 70 model. I know that I need hoses, pump, brackets, pulley and belt, but what about the sterring column. What is the difference between the manual column and the power one? Is it possible to just buy a different joint to connect it to the gearbox or is a whole new column necessary?

If it is the stock EB power box, you will need the correct splined joint for the bottom of the shaft as the power and manual boxes are not the same spline count. I don't know if you can get away with not installing a u-joint in the middle of the shaft if you don't have a body lift, but I have a 3" body lift and had to add the u-joint and basically create an upper and lower shaft by shortening the whole shaft by about 6". The two u-joints cost me about $100 from www.woodwardsteering.com The steering column itself does not have to be modified.

I re-used my manual steering shaft by cutting it in two pieces and then shortening the bottom half to the correct length and adding the two u-joints. To me, $100 for two u-joints plus a half hour with a tape measure and hacksaw was a better solution than spending $250 for a new lower shaft from one of the parts houses.

The pitman arm on a 70 Bronco won't fit a P/S box so you'll need a new one of those if it didn't come with one. Also the spline count on the P/S shaft for the steering is 13/16 x36 and the manual ones are 3/4x36. When I did my conversion I just got a new collaspable shaft from a 77. Rag joint by the firewall and 13/16x36 spline adapter on the other it. Plus it collaspes so it works with different body lifts. Broncoconnection sells used ones for 45.00 plus shipping.

Well you done bought ....we used only one u-joint 65.00 too much for a u-joint but that was the price .......do you have the brackets to make it fit ...
we used wildhourse for these ...and a sag. pump ..the hose was nothing more than a 15.00 hyd hose build...
It was the best swap I've done and my buddy likes his more than I do...
