Ive got a 71 with a T-shift D20 and 3-speed. Its been sitting for a long time in a buddys yard and when I bought it from him he didnt know what was wrong with it but he said that he was driving it and all of the sudden lost all power to the wheels as if he was stuck in neutral. He also said that he was able to shift the 3speed in all gears without the clutch. So Ive got it now and I can shift the tcase in all gears and not hook up to anything. Ive pulled the inspection cover and tcase shifter housing but could not see any linkages that had obviously fell apart. Ive never messed around with the tcase or tranny linkages so I really dont know anything about their operation. Any help to figure out the problem would be much appreciated!

my money's on the trans' input shaft. that would explain the clutchless shifting

My 66 did this. I wore out the clutch. A new disk fixed it. The 3 speed and t-case are fairly durable.

hth

you'll also need a buddy or two to get the 3 spd and t-case out.

havent had time to work on this for a bit, just got to it today. I was hoping that I could drop the tcase myself. without having two floor jacks its looking super sketch. What do you guys think, bad idea to drop it myself with only one jack?

I've dropped mine by myself and without a jack before. It's a bit heavy and I wouldn't recommend it. With a jack you'd be ok if you can securely strap the tc to it.

I removed mine without a jack. it's really not that bad. putting it back in, you will need a jack (too many fine adjustments to make, and hold the weight at the same time)
and one jack is fine, because all you need to do is balance it, while the jack holds the weight.

#1 I powerlifted mine alone both times! My daul exhaust helps can rest it and reposition my hands.....No injuries!

only choice I was left with....oh as a note....per my xmission man if its coming to a stop and taking off in the correct gear governer is OK! When its wanting to take off from 2nd or third then look at Gov.
Not to hijack but we determined my C4 is skippin 2nd, not those high rpm shifts into 2nd and 3rd but 1st to 3rd...Im thinking he's gonna find #2 piston stuck. The guy knows what he's doing just needs to herry up and get to it.

Did he check for a stuck clutch plate? Tractors do that after sitting but stay stuck IN gear

I usually get the wife to hold the transfer case up in place while I get the bolts started. She wines a bit but she's a good sport.
Are you sure the problem is in the transfer case? I had a factory posi that chewed off the end of the driver's side rear axle spline. Driveline turned but wouldn't pull the car!

Im too young to do that stuff, I guess I havent got my man strength yet;) I just used one floor jack with a board underneath it and tried to chain the tcase to it as best I could. I couldnt believe how heavy it is compared to a transmission!
I guess I didnt check the rear end, that shouldve been my first thought, to isolate the problem:p chock that up to being 23;D ill get it in the air and make sure its not the rear end and then pull the bellhousing and see whats going on in there

At 23 Id done it with one arm!

What did the clutch look like? The way you say he talked about it just happened instantly Id think clutch, have you locked the hubs? WHat do you get in 4x4 does the front do anything? if front works and back dont least ya know what end to look at, if front does nothing like the rear....puts you back in the x mission xfer case.

Tell me you didnt pul the xfer and xmission and not go in for a look at the clutch? Well call it practice if ya gotta go back in there...be good for ya!

honestly i didnt even know you could get at the clutch without removing the tranny:cry: How do you do that? I dont feel to bad about it cause like you said...practice!:p And the tranny in my 77 that is sitting in MT needs a rebuild so I was gonna pull this 3speed, rebuild it, and bring it down to MT so I could just swap it out. Im taking a lunch break now, but im gonna look at the clutch and most likely post pics after lunch. The rear end locked up on both sides of the pumpkin so the axles are still intact, right? forgot to check if the pinion moves freely, guess another after lunch check;D didnt get to the front end yet.

the hydraulic clutch is pretty slick, used wilwood parts, had to do it cause the BBK shorty headers I used ran right into the old clutch linkage. I got the headers for a really good price so i wanted to use em. Only problem is it binds a little bit cause instead of using the detent where the old linkage pushes on the fork, I used the hole for the return spring to hook up the slave cylinder. I couldnt drill through it with a hand drill and didnt want to torch it and lose the temper in the metal. funny thing is it didnt bind for nearly a year and then all the sudden this spring it started making clicking/binding noise every time I pushed the clutch in. I guess Ill just have to pull it one of these days and get the fork on a drill press to put the hole in the right place.

Wow! There is absolutely no friction material left. You should have the flywheel turned too.
