Gas Pig's thread about his U13 and its previous owner inspired me. I had info on one of the previous owners of my 75 Sequoia Brown but didn't know if he was the original owner or just a momentary caretaker of the brown beast. A quick search and I found a phone number and address that matched the old registration.

When I called Troy, he was still out hunting but his wife said he should be back shortly and to call back. I called a little later that evening and Troy gave me a lot of info on my Bronco that confirms some of the things I found over the last several months trying to get it back on the road. He said he was the second owner and bought it in 76 when it was only about a year old and it had 17K mile on it. He even told me the original owner name (more searching to do).

Here's why I titled this thread the way I did. "That Bronco has almost 400,000 miles on it" was one of the first things he told me. It still has the original motor although its been rebuilt once at around 250,000 miles. A timing chain replacement at 170,000 miles. The odometer is reading 47,xxx or so miles so I am guessing he isnt too far off, thinking 347,xxx. I have only driven it a few times and it squeaks and rattles like crazy, needs most of the weather stripping replaced but still runs strong.

Troy told me that the Bronco was their only vehicle for many years and he drove it to work every day. It took them to every baseball and football game his son played in and "hunted a bunch of quail" in the 35 years he had it. He reluctantly sold it about 2011 since he wasn't driving it and it needed the brakes redone and one of the side windows on the hardtop got shot out (kids with BB guns). He mentioned that the timing chain cover had a crack in it and leaked pretty bad, it still does! (my next project)

The truck changed hands a couple of times (3) over the last few years but was never put back on the road. One thing he mentioned was the couple that bought it from him didn't care about the title because they only wanted it for hunting and playing in the woods. So several months after he sold it, he threw out the title since they didn't take it. (title isn't need in Al before 76).

I asked if he would like to see if again and he said of course, so I plan on getting a few other things fixed and taking it by and talking some more with Troy. The Bronco was sold new in Montgomery AL and stayed in the area ever since.

Sorry to be so long winded but thought I would share a little history that made me smile. Maybe I need to start quail hunting :)

Sounds like the majority of Broncos from the South! Thanks for sharing. I know of one Bronco here local that has over a half million miles and still going!... and it is actually a nice Bronco! It's been through several engines and a million $ worth of gasoline!!

That's some cool info... not everybody finds out the history about them. Sometimes its cool to have the mystery I guess.

That is cool. I can only account for the past 19-20 years of mine thanks to the previous owner. I would be interested to know who wrecked mine (one side has been replaced) but otherwise its all me now... doesn't resemble its past at all!

Great story Golfball. Don't have any details of mine that deep.
The last PO of my '71 only had it for a couple of months. I bought it from him in '76 with 69k miles, 1.5 quarts of oil in the pan(over 4qts low!), with ticking lifters but good oil pressure. Oh, and a veritable swamp under the original rubber mats, and the first rusted through floors and kick panels anyone had ever heard of around these dry parts.;D

He bought it from a guy that ran a small shop in Mt View just up the road from me. I found a gas receipt of theirs wadded up in the glovebox, recognized the address as being next door to a friend's shop(!) and stopped by one time. Only to be asked if by any chance I'd like to have the original rear seat from the truck (that he'd kept for some reason). Score!

The original PO was a hunting club in Montana. The only record of that part of it's life was a faint shadow of the name where the decals had been stuck on the doors, and the service-record decals on the door jam from a Shell service station in Billings. Don't remember the name anymore. Had the date and mileage of each oil change.

Wish I'd taken pics of the decals back when I first got it, but I did at least leave them on for nostalgia reasons until they all finally just wore off from age.
Would have been nice to have been able to contact someone at the club to see if they remembered anything about it. Probably vague recollections of just another hunting rig, but you never know.
After almost 44 years of service, those that knew it might not even be around any longer. A little sad perhaps, but a true fact of life...

I'm lucky and don't need to dig too deep. I bought mine from the original owner about 5 years ago. Nice guy. I've driven her back to his place a few times and send him some pics now and then.

He told me not to cut it, and so far I haven't.
