Normal Oil Pressure?

The oil pressure in my stock 302 usually runs 30-40 psi. What is normal?

depends on your oil pump, but that is what i would consider normal

That's where mine has always run, closer to 40.

That sounds good. My original would fall of to almost nothing if you let it idle when it was hot. She never knocked and only had 30# at about 2k rpm. My fresh engine will make 70# cold and drop back to 40# at operating temp. I set my clearances up at .0015" on the mains and .001" on the rods.

Its funny this thread came up . I just changed my oil , filter and sending unit this weekend . I had around 80 to 90 psi (stock gauge) most of the time and figured that was do to high volume oil pump I have . Anyway after I buttoned everything up with the new SU and started the engine I had zero oil pressure ?? I scratched my head a little and put the old SU back on and still zero oil pressure ???
I bought another SU and put it on . I have pressure but now it reads around 40 to 70 psi .I looked at the first SU I tried and noticed something was blocking the pin hole that oil flows into on the threaded end . I cleared that and tried it again . Sure nuff it worked and gave me a even lower reading of around 30 to 50 PSI ???
I guess I can what ever oil pressure I want depending on the sending unit I have !!;D.................. GO figure ???

40 lbs. @ 2000 rpm is good to go every motor will be a little different and DON'T trust elec gages good luck and have fun. Bill ;D

What is too high? Mine runs up around 70.

you need 10 psi for every 1000 rpms you turn to keep everything lubed and happy

Be leary of excessive oil pressure. I rebuilt a 289 with mild mods, rv cam, alum. intake vs, iron and a "high volume" oil pump. I ensured that the cam and the distributor gear were of compatible metals. Ended up with 90 psi at start-up (100 psi mech. Autometer gage) and dropped to 70 psi when fully warm. 500 miles later, enroute from CA to 'Bama, the engine dies! Excessive drag on distributor/ cam gears wore the teeth to shreds and one tooth broke off. Replaced Hi-vol pump with stock unit and new distributor gear. 50 psi cold, 40 max when warm, 20 at idle.

also if you run a high volume pump, stock pan and are turning above 3000 rpms for any extended period of time the pump will pump everything into the top end of the motor leaving the pan dry and no more oil to be pumped to the lower end
