I have had a 435 in my trail Bronco for 10 years and have not experienced that problem.

I love a NP435!
I have two vehicles with NP435's, one where it is a bit tricky to get it into third, you have to stab it just right or it gets rejected; the other which is easier to get in, but it rattles like crazy under load.
I think that third gear is the NP435's Achilles heal.
I recall reading somewhere that there is an issue with flat towing and third gear as well, but I can't remember quite what.

Hard to get in is most likely the synchros for that gear.

I need to rebuild one of these so I have a better idea of what's going on.

1. Try adjusting clutch?
2. Might be a 3rd syncro going bad...from to many 2nd to 3rd speed shifts with a little grind.

Mad the NP435 is a cake walk to rebuild and that is where I would start. If it is sticky it could be the synchro pack going bad or even galled. They use a soft aluminum ramp and synchro so they are robust as hell but when they wear they cause problems like this. The kits some of the vendors sell are very incomplete so I would look at someone like Novak so you can source all of the parts, bearings, seals, new synchros as well as new shifter rebuild kit. We did one recently and I was never a fan of the NP435 because all that I had ever shifter were worn and sloppy. That truck changed my mind, nice firm crisp shifts all running just straight 90w gear oil.
