Any suggestions on paint to use in the shift pattern? Thinking I'll need less than a quart...

I don't have an answer to your question, but it did remind me of what I've had on my Bronco's shifter cane for 25 years, first for an NP435 and then for my NV4500. One of these: https://www.mcmaster.com/6050K34/
The serrations on the side have completely worn smooth. More than a couple of people have asked how I know what gear I'm in. Duh.

The factory pattern on every NP435 shifter knob I've seen/touched/driven is a molded plastic insert - paint will wear away.

(click this text)
The inserts didn't start until sometime in the '80s (maybe with the introduction of the '80 trucks?). Here's some examples of the earlier ones that most of us have (or had) in our trucks with typical wear on them.

Testor's plastic model paint.
I've used that before and it works ok. Eventually wears off again but no big deal. I'm sure the factory had some baked on finish of some sort.
