Hang tight someone will chime in soon I'm sure... My dad and I did the swap about a month ago. No issues on that front but I do remember that in the tech article we used you can use or "clock" the location in 3 possible positions and that may have something to do with it... We went back with the stock location.I'll ask him in the a.m. And tell him to post if you don't get your answer.

We had more trouble with the body lift and the cross member than anything..

you need to clock the adapter ring. the bolt hole distances are different, so you'd be better off lining up the ring with the trans first and marking where the top will be. then line it up on the t-case and bolt it up.

73stallion is right. It's a little detail they leave out of the instructions - guess they know how fun it is to wrestle with a D20 holding a few bolts in your teeth.

At least in Baja's case, they're usually reeeely clean bolts. The rest of us have to clamp down on dirty nasty greasy bolts. Ugh.

Oh, and welcome to CB by the way! Sorry to hear you're having trouble, but what they said should get you through the hard part.

Good luck.

I just completed my NV3550 install and had the same issue. The ring is clockable and the transfercase can be installed in 2 locations (your choice) but if you look on the adapt. ring you should see a drill index mark this mark should be towards the top of the tranny. As others have said "line the ring to the tranny without the transfercase first.

Funny thing is, when I did the NV3550, I just happened to hit the right orientation on the first try. It was not until I took the whole thing off later for the off-the-frame thing that I discovered this very specific position for the adapter ring. Anyway, that is why it is not mentioned in the tech write-up.

Jackel pointed out the little drill mark that goes at 12 o'clock. I dont remember that from the last 3 NVs I did, but I saw it on the one I'm doing right now. Wonder if it has always been in their kits or if they added it recently?

Well, I can say for sure that the little drill mark was not there. I very carefully made a permanent marker mark to get the proper alignment before I started getting in a bind going back together with it. No mark in sight, at least not on my early version.
