I sort of agree with Mike C and some of the others on this. No I havent been involved in this by posting until now part of the reason is below. While I'm sure there are nothing but good intentions behind this is it really warrented?. Unless I've missed something(if I have let me know) in all the posting I believe I read that there was $1500 a month availible for this project of his own money so why a raffle is needed who knows? For those of us that are in or have been in the military we all know what Army captains make and its not that bad plus being in a combat zone there are extra entitlements every month like hostile fire pay $250 a month I believe Family seperation pay about $250 a month, per deim $3.50 a day Tax free base pay not sure off the top of my head what the rate is for officers but I know they only get a certain amount tax free but still I would think that it adds up to more than $500 a month. I believe there is also iminent danger pay $250 but not sure if its authorized or not. So with the extra $$ for being in Iraq adds up close to $1500 a month just off the top of my head although some of this money doesnt get paid until his return he still will get it. Add all that up for a year and its a pretty penny. I know I've been there more than once and will probably go back.

I think you may have missed something broncnaz that I don't know I can explain %)

But for three years I mowed a neighbors yard until he moved. He was a wealthy man and could have contracted out having his yard cared for. His wife would make me a cake every now and then and several times he brought over watermelon. The other neighbors may have thought this was not warranted, and maybe it wasn't, but it was something I wanted to do and I figured it was nobody's business weather I did it or not. And to my knowledge none of the neighbors I never mowed for ever complained about either of us or called us names.

I also like extreme makeover home addition. Maybe those neighbors think they or someone else deserves it more than who gets it and that the person who does, does not deserve it for one reason or another. I don't know, but it has not deterred my appreciation or enjoyment of the show and I figure those who do not like it can change the channel and watch something else. But maybe ABC gets letters of complaint for their efforts as well.

But in this case, my participation in the appreciation expression is voluntarily given, and not for a single solder, but symbolically for all as expressed through this project upon one brothers Bronco while he is away. It could have been yours or anyone else's.

So I guess you could say none of this is warranted and maybe your right. But what does it matter, and weather or not it is warranted was never the point to begin with.

I guess my point is that I will mow who I want for, watch what I will on TV, and show appreciation to those I so choose, regardless of what others think, and I will try not rain on the parade of others who think differently.

And Thank You for your service as well my friend

Have mercy! I am under enough stress while my husband isn't home without worrying over whether or not our family is deserving of such a wonderful gift. :(

Your right. I agree we do want we want. I probably should have worded my post a little different. I'm not trying to judge wether its warrented or not that is for each person to decide. But appearances can seem out of place when you put all the pieces together. But as I said I believe this to be in good intentions (just a little questionable from my point of view). I'm not trying to question or attack anyone's character.
Actually thank you Astark you've always been standup and well spoken.

Capt D
Sorry if this is putting more strain on you. Dont worry about it none, people will always question. Thats one thing you can always count on. But this forum is pretty civilized compared to other forums out there that get down right nasty. Hope the time goes quickly until your husband gets home.

I don't care if you don't like this project.

Wow, I never thought anyone would get on here and complain about the gesture of doing this nice thing for an American soldier and his family.

I spent 8 yrs in the U S Army and I made good money...I am sure Phillip does OK and I am happy for him in that respect. However, this project had NOTHING to do with how much money any of us makes. It is a symbolic (and somewhat monetary) gesture of thanks to a man and his family whose sacrifices over many years cannot be measured in dollars.

As Melissa just mentioned, there is plenty of stress involved in just living life on a day to day basis without your mate and the fear of what dreaded event may befall them while deployed.

So, for all of you nay-sayers out there I really don't care if you think it is "not warranted" or "not justifiable" to do this thing for them. In My mind and heart it is one small thing I can do to show our soldiers that someone, resting in the freedom and safety they are providing, gives a damn.

You should really read the beginning of the post to find out what is going on before you pass judgement. Since all you see is the negative, maybe a factfinding mission on your part would clear that up for you. Read the first pages of the "hubby in Iraq" thread and you will see how this project came to be.....

I guess no one ever told you to "get the whole story" before you jump into a conversation.

I guess you didn't read very much further after you decided Melissa has plenty of money. Let me put this into perspective for you...

1. Dependant wife with two kids and all the corresponding bills trying to do something nice for her husband or as she says, Her Hero.

2. Melissa never asked us for money...just info. The Members of this forum offered to help with parts, information, and money. Start reading "Hubby in Iraq" thread; pay special attention to post # 27 and beyond.

3. The tickets we are selling are for items donated to this cause for the benefit of the project. Again, not Melissa's idea...she didn't ask for a raffle to raise money...we just decided to do it...

4. As for if this project is warranted, see "Operation Baghdad Bronco Raffle" thread post #'s 144 and 148.

5. Maybe Melissa could send you some of her bills that you know nothing about and you could just pay them for her since you have the money thing all figured out.

6. You and a couple of the "others" you refer to really just sound jealous.

I am done with the nay-sayers on these forums, If you don't agree with the subject matter, thats fine, but instead of being negative, how about not saying anything? Does that sound like something your mother used to tell you? Yeah, yeah, I am aware of our right to free speach... and Melissa's husband is risking his life right now to help protect that freedom. Voluntarily, I should add... Yes, he volunteered to go to Iraq..he did not just come down on orders to go. That speaks volumes of the man and I respect that very much.

This project will succeed without your negative input.
