i know i have read this question before, but i cant find the answer now. today i smelled gas while i was at a light. come to find out my gas cap was leaking fuel. it was running down the side of the truck. i have opened it before and air sprays out and once a little bit of fuel came out as well. this time it gushed out for about 20 seconds. i remembered i fill it up full a few days before. what causes this and is there a way to prevent it from happening again?

My 68 must have the wrong cap on it then becasue when I open it I hear a big whoosh of air. Do I need a vented cap too?

the problem is you ever filled the tanks and with the warm weather in the Puget Sound area lately, this sometimes happens, but as far as the vented caps, I am not sure what yearthe vented caps dissapeared, but with your problem it could cure it. I had a similar problem, with my 68 , it would die, and I meen just die, I would see that the fuel gauge read full so I would open the fuel caps and the big ass gush of air would hit me , them I would start it up a nd drive a while and it would repeat it self. went and bought 2 new Vented caps, and off I went. if you look in the center of your cap it will have a tiny pin hole , Blow or suck through the whole, it is meant to realease presssure from the tank, to keep your problem and my old problem from happening. ;D

Interesting, I removed all the smog stuff from a car many many years ago and plugged all the 'useless' hoses. Turns out one of them was the tank vent line, need to let air in as you draw fuel out, I learned. Car died, remove cap, drive, car died, etc.. So the stock bronco doesn't have a tank vent line running into the engine compartment? It relies on the cap to vent and allow air in?

I just looked in my book and it does not show one, and by the way the vented cap is a pressure relief valve, blow or push with your mouth on the center , and you will hear a pop sound when the pressure gets higher. thats why they wear out

ok, had my new "vented" gas caps for about a week now. same thing happens. i open them up and a HUGE gush of air omes out. luckily i learned to only open them when they are empty. can anything else cause this?

My guess is still the lack of a vent but that would result in a huge inrush of air when you open the cap. If gas is rushing out, I have not idea why that much pressure is building up in your tank. Mid summer in the sun, perhaps.

Is it blowing air out or sucking it in? What year is your Bronco and does it have an evap canister?
