P/S pulley hitting the hardlines on the steering box. I posted this a while still not fixed and I want to add the new cooler and SS braided lines. Even adjusted the pulley barely misses the hardlines. I asked for people topost pictures of their stock power steering area so I could compare what it's supposed to look like normally, not one person posted a pic. I ask again if it is not too much trouble please post some pictures. So here's what I think the is the cause. MOTOR MOUNTS!! My brother in law just pulled the motor out of his 69(for the 3rd X we noticed when we cleared the engine bay we noticed that they had placed 4 washers on the motor mount stud. it didn't dawn on me till 2 days ago that they were trying to lift that side. The same side that the pulley is on, that is hitting the hardline on my 74. He order a set of Driven Auto partrs HD motor mounts. We think maybe the mounts sagged allowing the motor to tilt to one side. What do you guys think. Can anyone not only take a couple of picture of the offending area, but maybe someone with new motor mounts take a measurement of the pulley to the lines... Thanks..Mo

It's a tight fit. Mine was dangerously close too and I was worried that when the motor flexed in the mounts the PS pulley would hit the hard line. So I delicately moved the hardline a little to add more room. Now I have about 3/8 - 1/2 of clearance. I used the handle end of a deadblow hammer (soft) while pounding on the head to push the line down and away without damaging it.

Hi,

I feel your pain!

I won't be able to provide pictures of a stock set-up; but, I will be able to post pics of my current set-up in the '71.

I am installing a hydroboost setup. It was tough finding a pump and a bracket that would work together in the space. I am almost finished fitting up the cooler and all of thereturn lines. It is tight enought that it still bothers me. I'm just not sure if I'm too concerned.

I won't be able to take the pics until tomorrow (or maybe tonight). I will post them as soon as possible. I hope that helps.

Jeff

Thanks guys maybe it's not just me. I became paranoid when it was running I could see it actually touch the hard lines. I am going to do AN- but am not sure they would even fit with the current fitment issues. I can remember ever having this problem on my other stock set ups. I may just rob the 351w on my stand and do the serp set up instead, just wasn't planning on quite this soon. What about plumbing from pump to cooler and back. Will parts store SS braided line work for both the hi and lo pressure hoses with rebuild-able AN- fittings or do we need special stuff for the PS? Off hand anyone no the size an threading and type of fittings that the PS line use both at the pump and at the box? I want to go purchase the adapters to AN- fittings today as I am off? Thanks again. The widfe is nagging me about when I am going to get this on the road( I would normally love this type of nagging, but Damnnnn!...Mo in CA

Hi Mo,

I'll post the fitting sizes I ended up using on my set-up. They might be different than yours depending on which pump you use. (It sounds like you are running a stock pump, which may be different than the Saginaw I have.) (I know you want that information today... I'll see if I can get away to take a look.)

If your pulley is rubbing the fittings I think you've got an unpleasant surprise in your future. I think you need to make sure the pulley doesn't rub on any hose or fittings.

The low pressure lines don't need to be steel braid. I am running hose that attaches to barb fittings and then is secured with hose clamps.

I hope that helps.

Sorry this took so long. This bronco is in storage, but its a one owner stock '76 Sport with Dealer added AC. The dealer moved the Air pump over to make room for the AC compressor, but I do not think they would have touched the PS pump at all. This one is exactly like it came from John Bleakley ford in Douglasville GA in July 1976.

Some Pics

Hi Mo,

I have included some pics.

There's one standing in front of the grill and looking down on the pulley and steering gear. It's hard to get a good perspective from it.

Another one shows the pulley and steering gear from looking over the left side fender and down at the pump.

The third one shows a view of the hydroboost unit without the master cylinder taken from in front.

If my notes are correct, I used a 3/8" M SAE fitting on the pressure side of the steering gear box. And I used a 3/8" M inverted flare fitting on the return side of steering box.

As I said earlier, I didn't write down the fitting information for the stock power steering pump. I know the fitting I used on the Saginaw pump I have is an Autozone 648060 -6AN X 16mm X 1.5. (And I think the previous Lincoln pump used a -6AN X 18mm X 1.5.)

I don't know why this was all so confusing. As a disclaimer, I haven't completed the returns and filled it with power steering fluid yet, so I can't say for certain that all of the fittings are correct. I'm sure I'll have that doubt confirmed, or taken away when I fire it up the first time.

I hope the information helps.

Best of luck.

Jeff

I thought about the taller Driven auto parts mounts, and am going that route, not sure if that is the fix yet. Smaller belt thought of that I tried moving the pump over, it all ready is at it's closest point. Jeff you have like 3x's as much room as I do. I was even thinking of changing to a smaller dia. pulley. Yes Jeff the pictures help immensely. I am doing AN- as well. getting rid of the stock cooler. I have an 18" heat sink going on the cross member, below the identical set up for the tranny cooler. Summit has fittings on sale right now, I just gotta take the hoses off and take them down to the speed shop to figure out the sizes at the pump and box. I almost went hydroboost too. I am doing a period rstomod on Anticon which means as many upgrades that could have had installed back in the day. I have an aluminum hydroboost system off a t-bird but figured it was too modern. Instead I compromised with a chromed stock power booster and billet MC.....Will post pics when the engine bays done...Mo
