Painless 28-Circuit Fuse Panel in Tuffy Glove Box?

Hey Everyone,

After trying to make parts of two existing harnesses work, we came to the conclusion that we should just bite the bullet and buy a 28-circuit Painless harness with switches. (Ouch!)

We're trying to figure the best location for the fuse panel.

We're adding a Tuffy glove box to the dash. We haven't received the harness yet, so we're not sure what will need to be done to the glove box to make it work.

We've also thought about mounting it to the back side of the dash behind the location of the existing speaker grill. Scoop did one like this a few years ago.

We're open to other ideas, too.

I'd love to have a location with access for the addition of other circuits, without removing the dash (if that's practical).

Pictures of any installations would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Jeff

I did this exact mod, the tuffy box has a spot for the stock one. It need to be a little bigger for the painless, a little wire cut off and a few new holes and it works well.

Any second thoughts about mounting it there? I haven't looked at how the fuse panel will mount to the inside of the glove box. Do you know if you can remove the bolts that attach it to the glove box interior and then drop it down below the dash to make it a little easier to work on?

Thanks,

Jeff

There are threaded inserts in the Painless fuse block and the screws are inserted from inside the glove box, sandwiching the side in between. Shouldn’t be a big deal to remove those 4 and let it drop down.

Thanks. I haven't received the harness yet. In the pics the attachment points on the fuse block appeared to be threaded inserts. Sounds like a good plan to be able to drop it down. Trying to keep it simple and clean; but, plan for any changes.

Take Care,

Jeff

I installed the older Painless harness that did not have the fuse box in the glove compartment. It normally mounts on the firewall like earlier Broncos. Both the firewall mount and the glovebox mount make it hard/awkward to get at the fuses when needed. Mounting it behind the dash with an access door is the most convenient but also challenging to figure out how to hide it. I chose behind the speaker grille but I've seen them mounted behind the ash tray too. The ash tray trim piece makes a nice door but it's a bit too small. I hid mine with a roadster speaker grille louvered cover that uses magnets to hold in place. Works well for me.

I pre wired my whole dash, honestly the dash wiring was the hardest part of my build. I am still not happy with it. So so many wires:) I made the mistake or remote start, power door locks, 4r70w controller, ecu etc...

I like the fuses in the glove box though.

Hey Everyone,

Thanks for all the feedback. I really appreciate it.

I think Scoop and I think a lot alike. I like having the fuse panel in glove box; but, I'm concerned about access, too.

As far as what's being added, it's more for flexibility than adding anything specific at the moment. (I do need to wire in the ARB locker system, though.)

I really do appreciate the pics.

Take Care,

Jeff
