Paint & Clear Coat Question

The clear coat on my hood has worn away and now its is peeling on the side panels. What is the best way to remove the clear coating? Fine grit wet sand? I waxed the hood and the paint is still in good shape. Need something to hold me over until I can afford a nice paint job.

You are not going to get all the flaking paint off. You can try but I doubt you could. Have you tried using compressed air to remove it? It looks to me from that picture that the whole previous paint job is peeling. Base and clear. No matter what though, you have to repaint it to properly fix it.

Where the clear has come off, the base is also bad. At a minimum everything loose has to be stripped.

Easiest fix is to get the loose stuff off and wet sand. Try to feather the edge of the clear into the base. But if you go to far into the base it will remove it all the way down to primer. So then scuff the base up as well. Maybe a red scotch pad. Then i would get some good quality rat can clear coat. Or use a clear coat gun. Its not a long fix but it will get you by for a while. With as old as that clear or quality of it i would use 1000 grit and be gentle.

Best thing is to wet sand the whole thing. You will probably be down to primer in some places, but it won't stop you from using it in the meantime. Some wax and buffing will protect it from the elements while you use it. Just think of it as "doing it old style". You could also do a spray with primer over any real thin areas if you get down close to metal. It won't look real great for awhile, but it will be useable until you get around to a full repaint.
