I just got a grill back from the painter. I showed it to the owner and he asked if the inside part of the grill could be painted white. My question is: The new paint on the grill is base / clear. It was painted yesterday evening. I was wondering if I could paint over the new clear coat with a single stage paint and no prep to the clear? Of do I wait till it gets harder and sand it before painting it.

well any painting should be prepped with at least a pad to scuff it. Problem is the inside of the grill is a bitch. Way to much crap to get into. That being said I scuffed what I could quick and shot SS on mine. I did it in white and wish I wouldn't have.

The real problem lies in how do you paint the inside and avoid over spray on the outside, nest to impossible. That's why I shot white inside and out. I suggest you scuff the entire grill again....shoot the inside white...then shoot the outside again. A little over sray on the inside no big deal right? Except its white and youll always see it.

When I repaint my bronco ill paint the inside black. White show too much crap and never will be clean expecially in a area where its imposible to clean. I don't think its wise to paint anything in the engine compartment white. youll never see a new car or truck that's white and has a white engine bay. Just a stuped idea. You need to have a man to man with the owner and explain to him why white is just a redicouls idea.

But if the owner has a lot of dollars and not a lot of cense then ya I would definatly scuff it. If he ant happy with how it looks now he will definatly not like when the SS start peeling off of that slick Clear Coat. And you as the builder shouldn't even second guess your instinct. Let it cure and scuff and repaint in base clear like it should be done. Don't half ass anything you do for another person.....its your reputation at stake....and from what I have seen your not the person to even quarter ass anything! keep up the super work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'll bet he just wants the back side painted to prevent future rust. Doing it now would suck. I did mime off the truck and did both sides at once, just to cover all the edges and hopefully prevent rust. After I painted the core support body color I went back and painted black over what you can see through the grill to add contrast. Behind the grill is not noticeable.

Surely Bax can explain the difficultly and move on

What I understand is the whole grille is painted one color and the customer now wants the center section white. Here is what I replied in a PM...

Was it baked in a booth? If so you can go ahead and prep it. If it wasn't baked I would wait at least till the end of the day and then prep it. Yes you can spray single stage overtop of cured 2 stage paint. Then get some fineline tape (3M 06405) which will be easy to make the bend for the inside of the grille. Once it's taped off lightly scuff it with a grey scuff pad. Once all the nooks and crannies are scuffed, backtape the grille openings so no overspray gets on the back side. Then mask the rest of the grille and spray it.

I know it was an after thought of the customer but.....
The easy way to do have done that grille would have been spray white base coat on the center of it letting the overspray get on the outside of the center. Let it dry real good, then mask the center of the grille off, then spray the body color letting flash between coats, let flash a final time. Pull the paper off the center of the grille then clear the whole grille all at once.

Yes both sides of the grill have been painted and cleared green. There was some pre talk about the open part of the grill being a different color. Black . white, no forget it all green. So its all green and now it need a white face. Nothing to do with the backside of the grill. In fact masking it off is not going to be that hard. I was just wondering if I could spray on the clear when it was this new without any prep. The answer is no, and that is what I needed to know. I can see where painting it white first would of been easier but it's too late for that now.
Thanks for the information. I do appreciate the help.

I know Bax has it covered but for others that might want to do it the right way from the beginning and the way Baxs' painter would have done it...
The easiest/cleanest way is hang the grille up.
1)(I missed this step in the reply) Apply body color or black to the back of the grille.
2)Wait for it to dry
3)Backtape the grille openings and the backside of the grille with paper
4)Spray the white in basecoat and let the overspray get on the rest of the outside of the grille.
5)let the white dry
6)mask the white with fineline and masking paper
7)spray the body color on the outside of the grille
8)let dry
9)unmask all the tape and paper
10)clear the entire grille

Does that make sense? That is the way I would do it but other ways are fine, just more work.

Yes your way is good because it clears over the paint change. Now mine will have a slight ridge at the color change. Not the best if your wanting a nice job.

Allen, thanks for you help. I'm not ready to paint yet, not doing a real fancy job as it's an offroad rig, but I always look forward to your replies. Thanks for taking the time to explain as this may actually cause me to paint the center section white. What a great site we have, thanks to everyone for helping. The ribbing is more than I can take sometimes, that's good.

I hate those ridges too.

You could also scuff the whole outside of the grille with 800 and a grey scuff pad. Wipe it down with prep solvent, mask the back side by backtaping the grille openings and the rest of the backside of the grille. Then mask the center out so no paint gets on the green. Apply the white with base coat in the middle of the grille. (You could also use single stage white if the hardener is the same between the ss and clear). Then after the white has flashed off unmask the just the face of the grille and apply the clear. That way there will be less of a ridge. If you want to really hide the ridge, apply the first coat of clear just on the tape line, let flash, then apply clear.

Many different ways to do it.

so if I sanded the whole front of the grill. painted the white. then clear the entier front of the grill again. i would have a better chance at no / not as much of a ridge at the color change. I think i understand that.

Yes, but you can't sand with anything coarser than 800 and a grey scuff pad on the green. If you go coarser than that you will see the sand scratches in the clear on the green. The best way to get rid of the ridge is to clear over the whole thing and then sand it all again with 800 and re-clear. But I wouldn't do that in your case since it would then have 3 paint jobs on it. I would only do that if the grill was started in primer or sealer. Not after a paint job is already on it. That is what I did to the hood of my Volvo tow rig when I did the ghost flames. After the hood was dry the next day I came in and sanded the whole hood with 800 and re-cleared it.

Just in time. I'm getting close to that stage. BTW, nice color. I've been looking at Dodge Mango Tangerine, but I didn't want to really paint it close to a Jeep color. I saw a similar color on a Ford Fiesta, but haven't been able to track it down. What color is that?

Thanks. It's a Honda color YR579M that is on the Element. I have no idea the name of it since I never go by color names. Here's a picture. I don't know why it's sideways

Here I thought that your tires just had some insane grip!!!

this thread is déjà vu. I'm pretty sure you walked me through this exact same process about a year ago. You really do need to write that paint FAQ. :)

very steep hill. you know what? The customer changed his mind and told me to keep it all green. I am sure glad I did not take the 800 grit to it.
