I'm trying to get the pilot bearing out of the engine as I'm switching to an auto. I've packed it with grease and driven a socket in, then a big bolt through the socket and it still won't come out. How hard can i hit it? I'm at the point of no return as I don't think i can get the bolt(used the stud end of a receiver ball) out.

Had luck with a dowel rod after packing it with grease and it popped right out.

If it's really tough you can get a pilot bearing remover tool or rent one at autozone or a parts store.

I took a wood lag bolt once and air impacted into the bushing. It pulled that sucker right out. had to throw both of them away but who cares. Its a wood lag and I'm an American dam-it. If I want to waste stuff I can.

I tried the pilot bearing puller and it wouldn't work. I eventually rented a big slider hammer from Schucks (Checkers). You pay a deposit and they refund it back to you when you bring the tool back. I made a freakin mess with the grease trick. Then switched to soap and no luck there either. Then tried the bearing puller. PITA! Don't screw around with it. Rent that big slide hammer and pop it right out. ;D
