40A is a good power level. It will run off the same home 220V power as most welders.

I have a Thermodynamics Cutmaster 50. A friend who is a welder for a living with Empire Machine had another name brand unit at home. Plus the ones he has at work. He regreted buying his (sorry forget the brand) as he prefers the cuts from my Thermodynamics.

Consumables are an important factor. Not only the cost but the rate of wear. A coworker has a China special that he uses to build derby cars. His consumables are cheap and even double sided. But he goes through them 10x faster then I do. There is value in quality. I bet he is up to the total cost that I have spent, he just spent is in consumables.

My choice was the miller spectrume 375 extreme. Cuts up to 3/8 and can switch from 110 to 220 from a switch of a plug. I purchased mine on ebay. They are about 1200.00 and list for about 1500.00. I choose a Miller because If I ever needed something fixed or needed parts I felt as if I would be able to get that done without alot of hasle. Here is a link to miller.http://www.millerwelds.com/products/plasma/spectrum_375_x-treme/
