SOUNDS! AGH! okay no one seems to be able to help me here! ?:?

okay the tranny is the 5 speed nv4500 with a dual friction centerforce clutch. if im going 70.. then from there as i accelerate to 77 it'll make this pinging sound coming FROM the tranny.. it's right under the tunnel cover im positive.. it sounds like a small BB in a jar being bounced around.. it only does this in 4th and 5th gear (5th the most) .. if im going 70 or so and i let off the gas in 5th i hear a clunking sound in the rear.. then i gas it and i hear it again... any ideas? im afraid i might have a serious potential problem!

If its only in forth or fifth and when your going fast then it must be from the output shaft of the tranny and back. From the clunking you mention maybe it is just a bad u-joint they can make funny noises. Can you feel the noise as well as here it? Is there any sort of vibration that occurs with the noise? It could be as simple as a rattling exhaust system or something loose in one of the linkages. Bearings can make all sorts of noises but usually I've never heard pinging like a BB in a jar from a bearing. If it was that bad you would probably feel I vibration with it.

I would start with the simple things first, I would not be at all surprised it you find something loose or a bad u-joint causing the problems

jack it up (use jack stands, think safe ), put in neutral, get under there and check the u joints for slop.

Aren't you living in seattle now? Where in seattle can you get up to 75. I feel happy when i get up to 45 driving through there. :) :)

i agree with some of the others though i would check your u joints and cv joints first. The cv can be hard to diagnose some times unless you take it off the truck.

There are plenty of places to get up to 75 just not in the city. I just don't know if I would do in in my bronco, on purpose anyways.

But like everyone said u-joints, cv joints.

You can get 75 on the Mercer Isalnd Bridge/I-90 tunnel, we used to drag race through there and over the bridge when I was young and dumb and driving cars. You'd have to do it at 3 am nowadays, but it can be done.

I am glad I'm whiteknuckle at 60, my fast cars got my license suspended, thats why I have trucks and a trail crawler.

Does sound like a u-joint, I heard that kind of noise before losing one on my 68 ford 250.

Do not wait to examine it, it sounds like its a forward joint if you can sense it in the tunnel. Pogo sticking @ 75;:eek:

Hey, by the way, there was a half cab and bulkhead advertised in the 66-77 parts. I saw you were interested in getting one, but
Dan

I would guess U-Joint or CV. If you are whiteknuckled at 55 then you should check some of your suspension components. My Bronco is great at 80 MPH. It cruises at 80 comfortably and doesn't bounce around.

I had a u-joint go bad in the cv and it had a wierd sound too. My bronco weighs 100lbs more in the rear and rides nice at 79mph. Confermed speed by washington states trooper on my way down to son o beach. I'm glad I was slowing down. ::) Got let go with a firm warning. A fellow bronco fan in blue. Nice guy.
