Is the shaft on the Saginaw power steering pump tapered or something ?

I have new pump with a 3/4 shaft and a new pulley and I can't draw it / push it on any further than half way.

Time to get the propane torch and try heating it up or ?

be careful with the heat you mite take out the pump seal. Are you using a pully tool to do the install???

You need a bolt that will thread into the opening of the power steering pump shaft. Then use a flat washer and nut to turn and shove the pulley onto the shaft.

this is precisely what I have been doing and I know I am two grunts away from breaking the bolt off in there or stripping the threads on the pump.

I guess I can take it to a machine shop and have them do it instead of heating it up. I forgot about the seal.

Take the pulley off. Check the shaft for burrs. Remove any burrs with a fine file. Grease or oil everything, the pump shaft, the inside of the pulley, the bolt your are installing the pulley with. Oil the threads of the installation bolt and try again. The pulley will not come off because of the oil. The pulley will scrape off the oil as it is being installed. The above has always worked for me.

Saginaw has two different sized main shafts, depending on if they're serpentine or V-belt configurations. What parts are you assembling?

the pulley is a 73077 from Napa that several hydroboost threads stated to be the correct pulley

the pump is a new / unused dual return saginaw I bought off of the classifieds here. don't know what it came off of though

would the serpentine version have a slightly larger shaft by chance ?
