I've read thread after thread on this and I know each individual case is different. That being said... Bronco will be driven on highway (not interstate), rural area and for beach cruising (20-35 mph). Very seldom if ever off road.
Current motor is original tired 302 w 3 spd manual. Will convert to auto. Rear end is 4.11 and 34" tires. No body lift but can lift if needed. Want to keep stock hood. Rather spend a few dollars than to fabricate (can't weld) but can figure out bolt on mods.

I own a C4 out of an early bronco w adapter and an AOD from '89 4wd 302 truck w it's original adapter. I have a few early model 302's laying around, would want to rebuild any of them if used. Also have new 4brl carb.

Questions:
1) what motor? rebuild 302 if so what are wise improvements? Or pick up a later model engine?
2) Which transmission? AOD cost of modifications seem high. C4 high rpm's.

My last bronco was a warmed up 302 and C4 and I was happy except for the high rpms when over 50 mph. I don't know how that rear end was geared.

I know there is no perfect solution but what scenario would give the best opportunity to be the solution for me? And wisest way (not necessarily the cheapest) to spend money.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I suggest making your 302 into a 347, the extra 47 ci of stroke usually is good for at least 50 foot pounds of torque. No overall dimensions change so your hood is no issue I would also use the aod trans that way you can gear it low like 4.88 maybe even 5.13 and have it take off nice from a stop but still cruise at 70. If your serious about not really going on large freeways, I would go 5.13. you will love how quick 1st gear takes off. 5.13 and 35in tires cruises at 70mph below 3000 rpm I am pretty sure.

How fast is your highway driving? Some parts of the country a highway drive is 50MPH, other parts of the country a highway drive is 75MPH.

Flat land at sea level, or are the beaches at elevation along mountain lakes?

Your AOD has the large transfer case bolt pattern, would need adaptor to use. Different driveshaft lengths. Crossmember will need modification, fabrication, or replacement. Different gearing in the axles as well or the overdrive will hunt and self destruct.

For your tire size, gearing, the C4 is probably the better choice

For the engine, what is your plans? Stock (good running) 302 enough? want some fun torque? HP junkie?
I know you have a bunch of engines, but what about another? Pick up a later 351 in good running condition. Right intake and it can clear the stock hood. More fun torque for less money then building a 302. The engine is the early balance so the old accessory drive will work.
If you want to avoid fabrication, the C4 will bolt in without any fabrication.

I have been stressing over this for a while now. I think I am going to just buy the $2310 short block or the $3299 long block and be done. The only thing I need to figure out is putting my stock 2bbl manifold on. I just want a stock runnner
