I stripped my steel plate bumper down to bare steel with a wire wheel, cleaned it thoroughly with lacquer thinner and immediately sprayed with spray can primer. Is there a recommended grit of sand paper to sand it with before applying a coat gloss black (also rattle can).

Thanks!

I welded up this plate bumper kit and got it powder coated. Roughly $150. They sandblast and coat. Should be more durable than rattle can.

It sees a lot of trail time so I need to be able touch it up with rattle can occasionally. Powered counting looks great but won’t work great for my application. Thnx fir the feedback tho.

I wouldn’t worry about sanding it.. just clean it really good and shoot it. I’m partial to Steelit..

considering it's a trail rig, your calories spent on wet sanding and prep may be a waste once that first tree pinstriping or rash happens. BUT if you decide to sand the primer, you can use a 600/800 grit followed with a cleaner and or tack cloth. if you go to that effort you may as well polish the gloss black too.

I haven't done a bumper but I did do a utility trailer that I built. After primer I just did a quick scuff with scotch brite then wiped with paint thinner. I used either Rustoleum or the Ace brand equivalent in a a spray gun that I got from HF. I thinned the paint with acetone. A few years later and it still looks good and I touch up with rattle can.

Get a cheap harbor freight HVLP paint gun and start buying epoxy primer for your base primer online.

Shoot primer on it one day, then shoot some black semi gloss enamel paint from a local automotive paint supplier or off the internet the next day.

1000x better quality than that watered down rattle can crap.

What's even cooler is having multiple colors primer. If I am painting something black, I prime it black, if I am painting something gray, I paint it gray.

Then if I scratch it, the scratch barely shows

If you haven’t already painted…. Lightly Scuff the primer with a red scotch bright and paint it. For bumpers I really like rustoleum and duplicolor wheel paint. Not sure what they do to it but it is more durable, it is what is on my bumpers and cage. I’ve touched them up some over the years but most of it is the original that I put on it 12 years ago.
