I posted something like this in the "What did you do today" thread but I have a few questions and comments. First off I replaced the heater core and rebuilt the heater box and seals. While under the dash I removed some old nonfunctioning after market gauges and replaced them with new ones. So far so good, only a few scrapes to the knuckles. I found a few small bulbs just hanging behind the dash and figured they were for the stock gauge cluster. Plugged them in and ta-da, the entire dash lit up along with the gear indicater light on the column. Never even knew it had a light in it. Later took it for a ride to fill it up and it seemed like it was running alot better. Is it possible that with all the unconnected wires and such behind the dash effect the engines performance? Could it be a grounding issue? I know that can be the root of many problems. I'm sure it's not all in my head. It really seems to be running alot better.
