This thing looks awesome! Nice work on all the floor pans and fender stretching looks real clean.

I have a 1970 which i am going to put a '78 F-150 4x4 steering box into, hooked up to that i am going to drop a saginaw pump in from a mid '80s econoline.

If you had some pictures of your p/s setup that would be sweet. Also any tips or helpful information is much appreciated. ;D

Keep up the awesome work.

Here are some pics of how I mounted my F-150 4x4x2 box and Saginaw pump. I reinforced the frame with some 3/8 plate on the inside and outside and then ran some DOM tubing through the frame for the bolts to go through. To mount the pump I modified the stock Crown Vic bracket to accept the Saginaw pump. I also welded in a second return line into the back of the Saginaw reservoir. Hope this helps.

Yes sir! I replaced the worm gear with 2 wheel drive box worm gear. LOL, yeah.....I don't think my frame will be cracking here. ;D

Modified? What ever are you talking about? I would never stoop so low as to modify such a work of art.

Ok.......maybe just a little. :-X Hope you don't mind. ;D I just haven't had it out of the garage to take more pics of it yet. I'll post em up as soon as I do.

hmmm... I have the 4x4 box. i was thinking either mount the steering box further back on the frame and mounting the pitman arm facing foward or getting the worm gear.

Any idea where i can get my hands on a cheap worm gear?\

Thanks
Tom

crawln,
Nice work! Did you consider running a tube across from that plate to the passenger side framerail? With all that plate there, Maybe you should add some form of gusset. For mines I ran a removable crossmember that doubles as a lower radiator mount.

That is some nice work there Mad. I did consider that, but wasn't sure if I would need it with the plate. I plan to install hydro assist in the future so maybe when I do that I'll add a tube brace like you did.

I found mine at the you-pull-yard. They come in a variety of late 70's and most 80's Ford trucks, cars and vans. Very easy to find. ;)

Crawlin68,

I've been thinking about doing the 4x4x2 box. Is this a complicated mod? I'm pretty brave, but don't want to screw up and have the steering fail at a bad time? Could a guy buy a rebuilt box from a auto parts store and then get the correct worm gear, or is it simple to rebuild a steering box. I'm not afraid to try, I just don't want to low ball my project and screw up a $15K rig over a $500 part.

BTW,

VERY (yes I'm yelling) NICE work on your rig. I could look a pic's of what you've done all day long. I admire your attention to detail, and it gives me ideas of stuff I can do (I'm not stealing, I'm inspired ;) ). I need to get out to the shop and get to work.

Thanks Galen,

The 4x4x2 box was a pretty easy mod. You can buy a new (rebuilt) 4x4 box at the parts store and then do the worm gear swap yourself pretty easy. Or do what I did and find a used 4x4 box at the you-pull-yard and rebuild it. The rebuiding part wat pretty straight forward. Then I found a 4x2 box at the yard and pulled the worm gear out to swap into the 4x4 box while I was rebuilding it. Then you will need to redrill the mounting holes in your frame in order to bolt the box in place. This is a good time to reinforce your frame while you have the steering box off too. Hope this helps. ;D

Well, I finished up the exhaust system today. Here are a couple of pics. Now it's back to cleaning up the rats nest of wiring.

Looks Schaweeet ;D

Any reason you had the exhaust come out in front of the tire instead of in rear? With body flex do you have to worry about the body contacting the exhaust tip at all?

No reason really. I just wanted to try something different. It will either be a great idea or a really bad one. :p

Should work well not anywhere for it to suck the fumes into the cab. Plus it looks good.
