tasker,

i started this post back February this year in gathering info on radiator options for my 96 explorer swap. the time has come to make a decision on a radiator.

definitely going with a 90-94 explorer radiator however i am still trying to decide on the AT or MT. i looked at the MT today at the junkyard and it just seems so thin. i am not ruling it out just saying...

my question is to everyone who has gone this route, which fan shrouds is everyone using? are you all using OE bronco 289/305 shrouds, 90-94 explorer shrouds or something completely different? i plan to use the 96 explorer mechanical fan.

thank you

AUTO is much thicker...trying with out shroud to start...the clutch fan pulls quite a bit...it's a work in progress

I used the shroud from a '94 V6 Explorer with matching radiator. I also found three different radiator thicknesses for this application. More info here.

I did the Explorer radiator swap on my '68. There are 3 different radiators.

1 - Manual. This one is skinny (like 1"). The inlet is 90 degrees to the face of the radiator. The outlet to the water pump is also 90 degrees.

2 - Automatic. This one is also skinny. The inlet is 90 degrees to the face of the radiator, but the outlet to the water pump is angled down at something like 60 degrees.

3 - Automatic with A/C. This is the thick one (2"). The inlet has a small angle to it, maybe about 120 degrees from the face of the radiator. The outlet to the water pump is the same as the other automatic one.

The automatic with A/C is the one that I used.

Do you have a part number for the lower hose you used?

I ended up making my hoses from a few different pieces. I have a tech write up with photos that I can email (I really need to send it to Jon to post in the tech section).

For the top hose, I simply flipped the stock one over and cut out a section in the middle to make it shorter. I used the 1.5” ID exhaust coupler to mate them together with clamps. I imagine a better solution would be to use the Explorer thermostat housing (the 90 deg. one) and the explorer upper hose.

For the bottom, I found a hose (C70391) that fit on the water pump inlet (1.75”) and had an angle to clear the alternator bracket and the front cross member on the frame. I cut it at a location where it clears the cross member of the frame, and lines up with a 45 deg pipe I bought. The second hose (B70471) has a 1.75” opening and a 1.5” opening. The 1.5” end is trimmed to length to fit the outlet of the radiator. I used a 1.75” 45 degree stainless mandrel bent tailpipe to join the two hoses.

All together I had $203 in all of the parts.
