rear axle backing plate shim

Why is that thin shim in there between the backing plate and the housing flange on the rear axle? I mangle mine a little more every time I yank the axle shaft. This time I finally destroyed it when removing my Moser 31 spline axle that I just twisted the splines on.

I'm replacing my Moser with a Yukon with tapered roller bearings. Do I need that shim, and if so, does a part store carry it?

Thanks

I beleive its more of gasket than a shim. just helps keep gear oil from seeping out. I'm not sure if anyone sells them I've never really tried to buy one.
