Any other rear disc brake conversions out there other than the Caddillac conversion? I've got discs from a '79 in the front and would like to stay "All-Ford" if I can.... What are my options, and what are your opinions???

Thanks guys...

There's always a set of late '70s Lincoln rear disks for a 9". They are a little harder to find, but they are all Ford and bolt right on. I am not sure what you need to do as far as rotors go, but I am sure that someone on the board has a set and has all of the details.

You can also use a set of rear disks off of an Explorer. The Ford Racing conversion kits for the 9" are based on these. You can look them up on the Ford Racing website.

I run the Cadillac rears. They are a little fussy to set up, but they work great and are dirt cheap to get.

WH Setup

I am not currently running the WH setup, but am doing the same search as you!

What I have learned about the WH setup is that you need to upgrade your entire rear end. The rear brake package comes with 31 spline axles only. If you are running stock axles right now, then you are still probably running 28's, like I am!

Yeah, I checked out the WH setup... It looks sweet, maybe I'll go that route. It's a bit more coin than I planned on spending, but I guess nothing is too good for my pony :) I would like to find out more about the Explorer rear disc option before I drop that kind of cash.... Anyone out there who knows anything about it???

$925.00 that seems WAY steep to me.   I think I am going to do the conversion with the heep rotors and the monte carlo calipers. $200 sounds much better than $925.;D

WH Disc

Lucky me Ive already got 31 splines and large bearing rear end. So it should be a straight bolt on for me. Ive heard of people running into problems with the caddy set up and being able to run an e-brake if your running dual forward mount rear shock hoops. The WH set up seem to be the way to get around this problem other than running a line lock for an e brake.

I just picked up a '77 9" with the Lincoln discs. I think all the was done was the rotors were drilled to 5x5.5"

I'm using the weld on brackets ($20 / pair) and 72 chevy impala front calipers and EB rotors . Of course I don't have an emergency brake ...but I don't have any emergencies ;D

What would the pitfalls of using a brake lock like a Line Loc or a Mico brake switch ? I used to drive a GMC wrecker back in the 60's that had a Mico installed in the dash , it was a manual valve that was lever actuated , to lock the brakes , you would hammer the B-pedal and set the Mico .I was set up to lock the front and rear when winching or hooking a car. I would think if it was hooked to the rear only it would work to hold the calipers in the applied position .

That would work great until it slowly loses pressure over time and you start to roll away! The MICO line locks are only for short term use and really should not be used as a parking brake.

I went to the Mico website and they advise not to depend on them holding for extended periods but I used park that 'ol GMC wrecker in the PM and leave it engaged , it would be locked in the AM .All it would take though is a small leak and bye-bye !

Currie makes an Explorer rear disk kit. You need a big bearing housing. Stock Bronco axles may not fit due to length and flange diameter - best to call Currie for info. Probably need to use forward mounted shocks or inboard. Stock e-brake can be used with some fooling around.
