I have Jamie’s tank the same one as in the pics above and when I was in Moab this year the little air vent hole near the top sprayed out all over the distributor and on top of the engine on steep hill climbs and severe declines. I had to refill it once while there I never thought about fire but I probably should have

Looks good but I think it would serve better if the filler neck were shorter so the reservoir could sit higher up, which would allow more fluid to the pwr steering pump, with that design it may be a problem if you wheel it a lot and are in off-camber positions. Guess you could fill the reservoir more but that wouldn't leave much room for expansion when fluid gets hot. That's just my thought, but cant really tell from the picks, hopefully it will work out good for you.

cooling

Are you guys using a specific manufacturer (Derale?) for your power steering cooler? What size ends are the minimum size you would use? What length or BTU's are you measuring to find enough heat loss? Sorry for the hijack, but I felt it was related.
Thx, Forrest

Fitting size will be 3/8" or -6. I scabbed mine off a truck in the junkyard years ago. No idea on the BTU rating.

I use a stock Explorer 5.0 PS cooler, 3/8 hose. I also run an in-line filter, keeps the steering gear clean from pump wear.

All of these options are too complicated. Just use the Saginaw conversion bracket available from Wild Horses. All self contained with an attached reservoir, neat, and a good pump. :)

I didn't have room for anything but the pump on the front of my current build..couldn't squeeze a Sag in there.

I've got a PS pump from a Nissan Frontier that's remote reservoir style that is even more compact than the Explorer pump.

I'd like to see a picture of that. My PS box is mounted inside the rail, so, every bit of room is key on my build.

It's not easy to see with all the brackets still bolted on to it, but the pump is signficantly smaller than Explorer pump yet has plenty of juice..the Nissan Frontier is not a "small" truck.

2004 model year..98-2004 same I believe. A reman is 165 bucks tops but a junkyard one would have brackets and pulley and you could get part of the pressure hose to re-use that banjo fitting.

Oh no, be careful or that pump will have a virus.

Just a thought...depends what the Frontier pump is trying to turn..
Stock or close you are probably ok, but turning 40"s and a lot of these pumps that have the similar pump dimensions put out gpm and psi numbers that are quite different than a similar sized pump...
Just saying, check the actual spec's

I'm a hydraulic system designer by trade (marine applications, but still...). I discovered that Nissan pump somewhat by accident...and was impressed with it's compact design after figuring out how its built. The rotor assembly is wide..at least as wide as the one in a Sag. They designed the inlet and pump section to operate at a much higher RPM than a Sag or typical Ford pump..hence the small diameter pulley.

I'd say it's , at the very least. on par with a Sag. You want/need more than that you go PSC etc..

The Nissan steering boxes are nice pieces too.
